I wanted to make a thread dedicated to my art now that I'm doing it again. I was always pretty good at art all through school. I think I've shown you some of my other works, but this will be about my works from now till whenever. I work in soft pastel which is like chalk and charcoal. I also use a charcoal pencil. Works are on paper, though I do have some paint work to do on big canvases. I mainly work on paper though, using charcoal/ pastel. Here is the first WIP (work in progress). I've worked on this about 1 week. I'm almost done but have to do a few more things. Tell me what you think!

Hey Dom. Good work. I like it. Kinda dark. Evokes a pensive mood. Waiting for something to happen. Makes one wonder what each is thinking. What they are looking at etc. Keep it up, you have talent.

Domindart,
This is one field I have expertise in. I've been a commercial and fine artist all my adult life, and taught two college levels of advertising art. You are good! You have a natural talent for composition and subject matter that generates interest. And, a technique of your own. I truly wish I could give you advice as to making a good living with your art, but times have changed SO much in the last 20 years that my past experience is not much help.
The problem today is that hands-on art (on paper, canvas, etc.) is losing out in favor of computer-generated art. Young people with mediocre talent can do passable renderings for print ads, etc. that are WAY better than their naturable ability through graphic art programs. Combine that with the dismal economy creating a climate where folks will work for a third of what the job SHOULD pay and you have a tough workplace.
My best advice to you today is to get that portfolio in front of as many people as possible. Your work can be applicable to both FINE ART and COMMERCIAL/ADVERTISING ART. The Internet DOES make that possible, where it was NOT possible years ago. Get your art into shows, on office walls, and in local galleries to sell for a commission.
Be creative. I am a "master" watercolorist, schooled by the late, great Irving Shapiro. Fifty years ago I used to double my job income selling paintings. I can do "realist" watercolor and oil with the best, but it's difficult to sell traditional realist art today. A few years ago, I began to do abstracts and the first year, I made more than $30K with them. Now, I haven't sold one in 2 years. The market is VERY up and down. (I did one I absolutely loved, put on eBay and there it sat. No bids. It was a vertical format, and I when it didn't sell, I turned it sideways, re-signed it and it sold for $600...) Go figger! Heck, I can STILL draw a pretty mean panda... LOLOLOL!
From what I've seen, what little market for real art exists, is more likely to go for your moody renderings than most other types of art. That gives you some advantages! If enough people see your goods, someone important, someday is bound to go for them, and you'll be on your way. One place I'd send pix of your art to would be the TV show "AMERICAN PICKERS". They must have a website. I think "Daniel Colby" might go for them, and SHE is a LOT more than the tattooed store-girl. She has a lot of businesses of her own, she's getting quite famous, and she seems to have a "dark side" that might match your work.
I want to encourage you to keep at it. You obviously have talent, and know your way around a rendering. All that's needed is to get your art in front of the right person, and it's "Katy bar the door"... LOL!
Well-done, and I hope you get famous!
Sincerely,
Leo (still slingin' paint hisself) in Texas

Leo, thanks for the kind words and words of wisdom, do you have any pics of your stuff?
I'm just about done with this one. I'll post up a final pic soon.
I'm getting some more paper this weekend and will hopefully be starting another piece soon. I don't have a proper set up for doing art right now but I've got a space on the floor in front of the TV lol

I don't have a proper set up for doing art right now but I've got a space on the floor in front of the TV lol I have some pix of my abstract art lurking somewhere in my old, crashed PC. I'll see if I can dig them out. I have some of my old realist watercolors somewhere too. When I get to them, I'll take some pix. I'm not doing too much art lately and it hasn't been on my mind, so maybe looking for the old paintings will stir me up! Keep at it! Leo
