Hello,
I am a scooter dealer here in the the Midwest. The last few scooters i ordered from my distributors (tao tao and peacesport) came in running to lean. I think I have it worst because of the cold climate here. Just wondering if I am just going to have to replace the carbs on all the new scooters I order since the EPA has sealed the air/mixture screw? Has anyone heard anything? I am guessing the EPA is not going to buldge on this one. The last carb I had, I tried to drill out the air/mixture screw and it was not there. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Well the carbs are cheap enough $25.00 each, or you can drill out the plug and richen them up. Alleyoop

Just drill the brass plug out; easy as pie.

What he found was a screw without any slot for a screwdriver, hope your not paying him top dollar. You can use a thin piece of hose usually the vac hose will fit snuge over the screw and you can usually screw it out if that doesn't go it get a dremel or anything with a point and scrib a line across the top of the head just enough to get a thin screwdriver to fit the scrib to unscrew it. Once you get it out you then can put a nice screwdriver slot in it. Alleyoop

One other way is to use a hit shrink tubing one that will fit around the screw then put some heat from the outside it will grab the screw then with a screwdriver put it inside the heat shrink and you can even heat the tubing to grab the screw driver a little and that will also work. Alleyoop

Another way is to use a back bit or reverse drill bit. If you mess it up you can then just get a new Fuel ratio screw. They run about $8.00 with everything spring, washer and o-ring. Alleyoop

ohhhhh... ok Duh us, that all makes sense.
I just wonder how all the folks ordering scoots online here in the Midwest are going to handle this latest EPA crap. Seems like people were just coming around to accepting China made scooters as being ok. Now it seems that this may knock us back to where we started, trying to convince folks all over again that these scooters are not bad at all with a proper PDI. Our work is never done. :-(
Thanks for you help. It is sincerely appreciated.

Well at least you guys are adjusting them before you sell them. Most troops on here and other forums when they buy them they have to do the unplugging and or just buy an aftermarket carb. Most buy them from online phone takers they that just take the orders and rturn around and order them from their distributor. The scoots are in the crates as they came from china the distributor just does a drop shipment.
If they buy them in the summer they run alright for awhile but sooner or later as the temps change around here they have problems and have no choice. They either drill the plug out or buy a carb. Alleyoop

Or, some, like me, just fuel up with premium fuel, to help against pre-detonation, due to the engine running so hot. In S-Florida summer, the engine runs very hot, and premium fuel is necessary. I presume in colder places the engine runs colder, but also runs leaner, because of the colder air.
You could put a restricter washer in the air intake, or exhaust, as alternative. Most of these scoots need double nuts on the exhaust anyway, because the exhaust bolts just vibrate off without any good locktite sealing.

I say just fix it right adding $25.00 for a carb with the fuel ratio screw available to the price is not going to be noticed at all. Or get that screw out and get a new screw for $8.00 bucks and call it a day. The customers will be happy campers due to the scoot running good and strong with no bogging and hesitations. If you don't you run the risk of it seizing due to running lean. You know people will run those little 50s like the cops are chasing them and if still under warranty you will have a claim to settle. Alleyoop, these are the same cards that come through with the heads broke off so you have to drill the bowl screws out so you can clean the carb or change the jets in them.

Yea, I think they started doing that in 2012 but the bowl screws are easier to cut a slot to get a screwdriver on it since they are even with the bottom of the bowl. Then What I would do is go to the hardware store and get some good screws to put back on. Alleyoop

that's what we do just use a dremel and put good screws back in them.
