...I think? Scoot is in my sig...I did about 45 miles today, mostly in hilly 2-lanes at 40-50MPH. After stopping for a while, it started acting weird...it feels like the CVT is not working properly, with much higher RPM's for a given road speed than before. (The engine feels like it's spinning as fast at 40 as it used to at 60+.) It also runs hotter than usual around town, though it does not overheat. Err...help!

Sounds more like your Variator weights they have FLAT SPOTS and will not climb as high as before and that will raise your rpms getting to the same speed as before with less rpms. Alleyoop

Does that mean I need new variator weights? How many 4-letter words will THAT entail? It happened all at once...one minute, it was fine, the next, it was like a car with no high gear.
Also, I have noticed an occasional popping sound from the CVT/rear wheel area while coasting down, if that helps.

Don't know how many 4 letter words will come out, but if the the weights have flat spots YES you will need new weights. As far a what you say POPPING are you sure it is not coming out of the muffler. If so it may be idling to low or running a little LEAN when you get off the throttle. If the IDLE is good then give the Fuel Ratio Mixture screw 1/4 turn Counter Clockwise IF YOU HAVE A CV carb. If you have a SLIDER type Carb with the AIR RATIO MIXTURE which is to the right of the carb near the AIR INTAKE, then Turn that screw 1/8 Clockwise to cut off some air. Good Luck Alleyoop

It doesn't sound like exhaust...it sounds like it is coming from the drivetrain. Note: it ONLY does it with the throttle totally closed. It's not idling low...if anything, I would like it to idle a bit lowER.
Variator weights aren't that big a job...right? While it's apart...should I replace the belt (or anything else) with 11K miles?

So...should I use stock-replacement weights? Bigger? Smaller?

I was going to suggest that you check the belt too. If you do end up replacing the weights(not bad if you got 11k out of them-they owe you nothing) ;D Replacing the belt at the same time should re-juvenate your ride. I would remove the cvt cover, and clean and inspect everyhing, and replace whats needed If you have been happy so far, just replace whats in there with the same

And what you just said about the POPPING when the throttle is closed, little lean on De-cel give the Fuel Ratio Mixture 1/4 turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE. I agree same stuff just replace with new. Alleyoop

I have seen complete clutch assemblies for ~$35-50 (like this one) on eBay...would that be easier than replacing the variators?

Well I gave you my opinion of what is causing your problem and from the way you describe what it is doing it is JUST THE WEIGHTS you do not need to replace the entire VARIATOR just clean it out and stick new weights in there. Also see if the belt has seen better days if so also get a new belt. my .02 you can decide what you want to do Alleyoop

I haven't found much looking for just the weights for sale, at this point. The one set I found cost more than the whole assembly. Never mind...think I found weights.

sliders are the better peformers, but I do'nt know if they work in the standard variator ramps.I bought the whole variator and it made a huge difference.
