On a typical scoot intake system, is air forced in from the spout on the box or is it sucked in?

In a 4t engine the air is drawn (sucked) through the carb. and into the cylinder when the piston is moving down on the intake stroke.
In a 2t engine the air is drawn (sucked) through the carb. and into the crankcase when the piston is moving up on the compression stroke, then forced into the cylinder (pushed) when the piston is moving down on the power stroke.

Roger that. Just wanted to make sure. IF it were the case that air were only entering through an outside push or push-assisted, then drilling holes in airboxes (and the like) would actually reduce air intake (the air coming in the hose/spout area would take the path of least resistance and fly out the holes vs. going into the engine). Thanks guys.

If you drill any holes in the spout between the filter and carb. you will be letting unfiltered air into the carb. and engine. Also if you drill hole into the air box you will probably have to up jet the carb. to make up for more air into the engine, or it will run lean.

Right; my holes are on the outside of the filter so the air is still filtered and I've already upjetted. I just wanted to make sure I was actually introducing more air into the system.

Some air box are tuned port to help maximize low end throttle response so going too wild there can cause poor low rpm atomization of the fuel in the intake along with lower fuel economy.

safer bet is to get an open air filter and not drill on the airbox, if you can't get the open air filter to work right you'll have an airbox that's not altered an open air filter is cheaper than an airbox.
