Hi, I was just wondering if there is an easy method for checking the gear oil level. I'm pretty meticulous about checking my engine oil since it takes like 10 seconds. But the only way I can think of to check the gear oil is to add more gear oil to the fill hole and have it run out again, but thats obviously a pain in rear to do often! I've read that some scooters have a separate bolt to check the level, but I read that in a book from '04 and I certainly see no such bolt on my scoot.
Thanks.

Is the oil leaking? What are you checking for? It isn't like the engine oil. It can't go anywhere. But mine is full enough to start coming out the fill hole immediately. Yours should be too. If oil doesn't come out it is too low.

I just got my new scoot so I'm being paranoid mostly I take it there is no special quick check, then? Its not a problem if there isn't, I just read that some (older?) scooters have a fill, level check, and drain bolt. I suppose the fill hole could double as the level check hole, but wouldn't that only work like twice before its perfectly level and nothing runs out of the hole?

The gear oil is pretty thick it will work for numerous checks if you're quick. The gear oil is not subjected to a lot of abuse and if you change per the specs and check it half way between the changes you will be doing more than many. Keep an eye out for leaks and dot worry to much. On most scoots the fill is the check btw

Its usually good If you dont see leaks if you see leaks around the gear box your pretty safe to assume its good

I always fill mine a little extra so when I remove the plug it over flows out a little...

You are supposed to change it at every oil change so there is little point in checking inbetween them since it would be very evident if it were leaking out that fast. I commute daily so that meant two oil changes a month on my Lance Vintage.
My current bike has a dip stick on the gearbox and while it too requires the gear lube to be changed along with the engine oil that schedule is now for every 6,250 miles
