I am wondering if a bit of graphite rubbed on to sliding parts may be beneficial.

Nix the parts washer. The bushings on the sliding sheave are Oilite or Boston Bronze and if you immerse them in solvents you will remove the oil imbedded in the pourous bronze they are made of leading to premature failure. You wipe them down with a dry rag for the most part. If you need to you can use a little solvent on the rag when cleaning the ramps but don't get solvent inside the bushed center.

When I switched to sliders I cleaned out handfuls of of that cheap Chinese grease... ICK. (gotta love Teflon!)

The Hondas I'm talking about are the bigger Elites like the 150, 250 and Helix. If you look in the tech tips #2 on ch250.net you'll see what I mean. There are some really useful ideas at that site.
So far as I know, Yamaha ran their rollers dry.

I am wondering if a bit of graphite rubbed on to sliding parts may be beneficial. Many will simply use a #2 soft graphite pencil to take take care of that task.

I recently replaced the variator on my Linhai 300. The brand new variator from Linhai had that same Chinese grease in the variator. I asked Jim @ Sunright what the best thing to do would be. He suggested wiping all of that out and cleaning it up, putting a small amount of MOLY grease in the grooves (for the sliders to move easy) and put it back together. It works great!
I would also suggest to check the variator every once in a while for routine maintenance. If the grease is getting too nasty, dry or gummy, you can wipe it out and put new grease in there to make sure it's working as it should.
Safe riding!
