i bought a 49 cc bashan scooter last fall to ride to work, rode it no problems till the weather got bad, put a tarp on it and parked it under the porch, with a good shot of seafaom in the gas. went to start it up a little while ago, charged the battery, cleaned the plug, all that good stuff, and no go. checked the plug, getting spark. sucked the old gas out of the tank and put in fresh new gas with a little seafoam in it, and still no go. so i took the carb off, opened it up, and found this sludge that looks like petroleum jelly in the bowl of the carb. no idea what this is, buying some carb cleaner today, hoping this will fix it. any advice in the mean time? like what this stuff is, and how i can prevent it from ever happening again? any kind of gas with ethanol in it will gell up after awhile of sitting (cant really give you a time frame bc it depends on what temp your scooter is being stored at) but you can make sure to drain the carb if its going to be sitting for a while. there is a drain screw on the bottum of the bowl that will unscrew and allow the extra gas to drain out, that should stop it fromhappening if your gonna let it sit for awhile.

Eeww.
When you're cleaning make sure to blow out the jets. (The 2 brass stick up things in the middle.) Also slide out the silver hinge pin for the float, remove the float and blow out the float valve.

ONE dont use shell gas stations gas they do that to my motors BP octane is good stuff. That's what sat in my tank from May '12 to this June when the shop spring-tuned/oil-changed my scoot. It took a little to keep running when I throttled, but then went just fine. When I told the mechanic about the dying on throttling issue at first, he asked how old was the gas. I told him "last May". He said gas that's been sitting for more'n a month or so starts to lose its combustionability (he used a better word that I don't remember now). I don't think he understood the gas was a year+ old.... (X) Regardless, they also drained all the gas and cleaned it and refilled it. And didn't say there was nasty jelly in there. >'Kat
