OK, maybe "disaster" is a strong word, but I was hoping to draw more people in for a better chance of help on my problems.
I purchased a 2006 Matrix 150 for dirt-cheap, but hoped to be able to get it running for my wife. After making sure it had fuel and a charged (new even) battery I tried to start it up but I am getting nothing.
First off, when the key is in and turned to on, the blinkers and horn work, but there is no response from the ignition or headlight buttons.
Secondly, when I try to start with the kicker, it seems like it is turning over dry, not coughing out exhaust, and not extending the push.
I am not getting any spark, but I don't know if this is an ignition coil problem, or some other electrical problem, or even a starter motor problem.
I'm pretty OK at doing mechanical work, swapping out parts, and stuff like that, but electrical issues are a mystery to me. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

can you say what dirt cheap was ? because even if the frame and wheels are good it only cost about 350 for a new engine with carb , starter , regulator , coil , and some other electrical parts . the main thing is to try to diagnose the problem with spending as little as possible just in case u need a new engine.

The guy I bought it from said it was running months ago, but he thought the valves needed adjustment. When I got it, it was partially disassembled because he had tried to work on it, but didn't have the time or space when his job required a move.

The switch is in the right position, but not sure if it is a good switch. By "jumping" do you mean bypass? I have not tried that yet.... If so, is this accomplished by laying a wire or screwdriver across the leads?

Exactly I prefer the wire across the 2 leads to the screw driver, less sparking. Some people like the sparks

Jumped the solenoid and the starter motor kicked on and turned over the motor but still not starting. Need to make sure the kill switch isn't "always on" still, but what's next if that isn't the problem? carburetor? other electrical?

make sure the motor is grounded to the frame. thats what it sounds like to me.--no starter, no spark all motor grounds yet everything with chassis ground works

Gwarrenster, make sure your side stand is up. As that will cut power I think. Job

Got the electric start kicking, the left brake cuts power to it if not depressed. Also, the numbskull who sold it to me cut and capped off the fuel line between the filter and the fuel cock. So it for sure wasn't getting fuel. Now that I've replaced the fuel line and can get the engine to turn over, I still can not get it to catch and actually start. This smells of fuel not getting through/into the carburetor but I don't know for sure.
So do I have any other option besides pulling the carb and cleaning out the injector ports??
