Weird question? Maybe, but when I set the valve spacing and rotate the flywheel I notice the intake valve and rocker arm do not stay together. I do have the cam set in the correct position before adjusting. I rotated the flywheel and the rocker arm did not stay with the valve and then the valve popped back up and actually broke the rocker arm. I am thinking it is out of time, however, all the marks line up including the flywheel and the cam. I recently did and top end rebuild and I am thinking that when I put the cam back in I used the flywheel marks and now I am beginning to think the flywheel is out of time. But I looked into the spark plug hole and could see the piston at the top of the case. I am lost for words I have so many hours into the thing. Any ideas
Thank you so much

A sticking valve would cause it to not follow the rocker. New valve, dirty, new guide, something that was not clearanced correctly. If valve is stuck open, when the piston comes up, it would push on the valve and may cause it to release suddenly.
Seems to me someone said a while back they had got a new cam and the sprocket was misaligned to the cam, which would be bad timing for the valves.

Wen you posted the other day about your engine "binding" and possibly being timed wrong my first thought was "uh oh". These are definitely "interference" engines. If the valves were down when the piston came up....well... I'd be taking those valves out to see if one is bent. Eyeball them good. Roll them around on the table. Slide them in and out of the guides without the springs and find out what's going on. The valve springs should be more than enough to slam the valves closes anytime they aren't being leaned on by the cam.
