Now between two scooters with front and rear disk brakes, I have replaced 3 sight glass. The original plastic does not get along with the brake fluid. I replaced the broken down plastic with watch crystal. 16mm X 1.0mm I used RTV Black. First one on Xingyue front brake master was in July 2010. It was opaque tan, and I touched it and it crumbled. Ordered 4 crystals. www.esslinger.com/watch-glass-round-flat-mineral-glass-crystals-1mm-thick.aspx I looked at kits or services to do the repair. Most sites were old and defunct, or cost more than the price of a new brake system with master, lines, hose and caliper together. Still looks crystal clear today. Second one was on the Znen rear brake master when I pressurized the reservoir by moving the pistons back into the caliper without removing the lid. Same size crystal, more RTV Black - with more than 20 hours cure time before adding brake fluid and bleeding. Third one was the rear brake on the Xingyue. I was looking at -NOT TOUCHING- and it appeared to be bulged or bloated. I took the lid off and it started leaking. For sure that fluid was due to be replaced anyhow. Cleaned the hole, more RTV Black and another new crystal. Curing for another 20+ hours. No doubt I will bleed both front and rear with all new fluids tonight. The front brake master on the Znen still looks good, and that fluid is only 1 year old.

a sight glass is nice - you can see a low level before you run out of fluid in case of a line leak. Maybe see a deteriorated fluid color if you can see through the "glass". A separate translucent reservoir would be nice, but then your at replacing the master cylinder in order to go that way.

On my scoot there is a sight glass on the right handle.
All I see in there is the brake mechanism.
Does not show fluid at all.
Whats with that?

If it is empty, or full, you wont see a level. If it is frosted and opaque, you cant tell. Proper level is topped up but not overflowing. The top of the sight glass is the low level. When you begin to see a bubble or the fluid moving, it is time to top off or replace. To take the lid off - find a good clean Philips screwdriver that fits perfectly. The small screws tend to round out because they are different metal than the reservoir is made of plus the brake fluid = galvanic reaction and basically seizes the screws. Use downward pressure, even a couple taps with a hammer to help loosen the screw. Slow and steady torque to turn the screw out. Take the lid off and see if there is or is not good fluid. Depending on the age of the scooter, you may have the original fluid, or over 2 years old fluid and it need to be replaced with new fluid.
I have disk brakes front and rear, so I have two master cylinders. Scooters with rear drum brakes have no master cylinder on the left handlebar. The cable needs occasional lube, but no fluid level.

I can see into the sight glass.
there is no reservoir there.
I can see the back of the brake cylinder but no fluid reservoir.
I have wondered about this since I got the scooter.
The book says the same you do.
But, no fluid reservoir behind the sight glass.

No pic.
The sight glass show the back of the brake mechanism.
There is a piece of plastic above the sight glass that appears to be in over the cylinder.
Hadn't wanted to try popping it off though in case it would break.

I swapped out my Chinese OEM brake fluid (which can be more corrosive) for good old Valvoline, and have had no issues with the sight glass.
