An 'E' clip does sort of look like 2/3 of a washer, and lot of carb insides are brass (maybe just brass plated?) which look sort of like gold. If it came loose, it's compromised and I would not trust it! I had 3 of them break, oddly close to another, but this was during a time I was shuffling the clip around to test-n-tune after a few rounds of modifications... I had no luck finding a 4th clip that fit well enough to satisfy me at Lowes or in the huge assortment at my work (its very small and metric) so I wound up putting in a tiny hairpin style clip instead, and its been working great.

hmm... looks like that is just a washer. Either there was a clip and it's gone now, or maybe you drop the needle into the washer, then drop them into the slide? Will it go that way? A lot of needles Ive pulled out have been slightly different, but there was always something holding the needle down as well as up. Either a tab that screws in place, or a plastic cap that the spring holds down... Is there any other piece involved with yours, like maybe a piece attached to the bottom of your spring?

Here is one with clip, the needle gore through the washer, but the clip hold it from falling through.

Was the needle still down in the jet when you pulled the slide and diaphragm out? If so, then there is a clip missing. If not, will the needle stay in the washer if you put the pointy end in? If so, that may be how it goes in, and the piece on the spring holds it down. This would not explain the initial problem though...
