On a 2-stroke, is it the trigger on the OUTSIDE of the flywheel that creates the spark or is it one of the stator coils INSIDE the flywheel???

Well very simple if you cannot see a pickup coil sitting outside the flywheel then it is inside. Alleyoop

Here is a 50cc 2stroke stator, it has the pick up coil on the outside. It all depends on the age of the scoot and what kind. Alleyoop Here is a 2 stroke with points:

Mine looks like the first picture you posted. Does the pickup on the outside determine when it fires the spark plug???

Mine looks like the first picture you posted. Does the pickup on the outside determine when it fires the spark plug??? As the FLYWHEEL rotates around fast around the STATOR, it produces electricity and feeds the needed things on the scoot. Some of the electricity is feed to the R/R which in turn sends juice to the battery to charge it, lights etc.. Also some juice is sent to the CDI, the CDI builds up the voltage sent to it and WAITS to get the SIGNAL from the PICKUP COIL as the Flywheels MAGNET passes under the PICKUP COIL . When the CDI receives the Signal from the Pickup COIL, the CDI THEN releases the voltage stored to the COIL. The Coil in turn takes that Voltage and converts it to anywhere from 20000-40000 volts and sends it to the Spark Plug. Alleyoop

will the stator of of one 2-stroke engine work with the flywheel from another 2 stroke engine? Here is my deal: I had a wrecked MZ Moskito with a CPI engine on it that ran. I have a CPI Oliver City scooter that the engine is bad. I took the engine from the Mokito and put it on the Oliver, but I had to install the stator from the oliver because the wiring was diffent....plug and colors different, but I had to keep the flywheel off the moskito because the shaft size seems different.....
anyway, i cant get it to run, yet it has spark, gas and compression.....and ran on the other bike

When the Magnet passes under the PICKUP COIL is when it fires they may not match. Alleyoop

Or just make sure the coil is getting the signal with piston near tdc. A test light makes this easy
