I bought a Sunway scooter today, garage sale, looks in good shape, but I know nothing about these. All I know is it is 49 cc, looks like a vespa, it is a Chinese scooter? Sunway is on the side. it has 229 miles on it. Owner said he rode it this spring. He did say the electric start blows a fuse once in a while. it has a kick start also. I think it is a 12v battery? I know it needs charged up. Anyway, has anyone heard of Sunway sw50qt-5?. It did not have a title. Anyone know how I can find out what year it is? thanks. Culli

No plate on the front panel below the seat?
I think one of the vin digits is a date code. Not a good idea to have a scooter without papers.

If you live in a state that does not require the 50cc scooters to be registered title is not needed, but he should have some papers to give you like a bill of sale and a manufacturers certificate of origin. Scooters are easy to steal and it happens too often, then they get sold at yard sales, on craigslist, on the side of the road. Redroush is right, there should be a plate on it that has information about manufacture, VIN number, the factory that made it, EPA compliance. You will see some name other than Sunway as the factory it came from. What you have is a scooter based on the GY6 139qmb motor, if it is a four stroke. It is what percent or more of the 50cc scooters are coming out of China.

[replyingto=admin]Doug[/replyingto]I did get a bill of sale, and I think in Iowa a title is required. There is an oil tank separate from the gas tank which is in the middle of the r ear fender. its empty, gulp. 1673M781351 are the numbers. the key has xindong stamped on it. The piston is not froze, I can kick it. No juice to the elec start yet. May be the battery is shot. Hope I didn't make a mistake buying this. Thanks

howdy i'm gonna come along and say you really need gremlin bells though it may be too late. if it is a two stroke and the oil reservoir is empty (gulp) that could explain why the starter has to work so long to get it started, that it blows the fuse. if it overheated with plain gas to burn, it seizes the piston and scores that and the cylinder walls. they are easy to rebuild though so not a dead loss if you got it for very little money.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Ouch,I hope there was some oil in that tank, yeah sounds like a 2 T not a four stroke.Look for a code on the motor case, hopefully it s a minarelli type motor, take the cover off of the drive and see if it has a belt or a chain, if it is a chain I would not put a lot of work into it, those motors will only be what they are from the factory and if tha is OK with you, great. If you want to modify it for performance not so good. The minarelli motor has a lot of potential.

[replyingto=shalomrider]shalomrider[/replyingto]I got if for 125. I don't think the cylinder is froze up yet as it moves when I use the kick starter, even though no sign of much oil in the oil tank. I asked if he added any oil in the gas and he said no. I still need to figure out why I don't have any power to the key , horn, etc.
thanks

[replyingto=admin]Doug[/replyingto]Thanks, I will look at the motor when I can and I will see if it has a chain or belt. I really just like trying to see if I can get it running and then decide if I like it or not. Atleast at $125.00 I hopefully did ok..Just need a manual or something too.
I need to figure out the battery thing, why I cant get horn to honk etc. Thanks again.

Loose wires, blown fuses, kill switch in the kill position, some scooters have a switch on the kickstand. Check all that out. For $125.00 you are probably OK.
As soon as we figure out what you have we can point you towards the right manual.

[replyingto=admin]Doug[/replyingto]Thank you for responding, I will look at those things when I can. I do appreciate the help. I don't remember seeing a normal kill switch. I am new to the forum thing. Can I post a picture somehow? Thanks

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto] I have put oil in the tank, the gear case has an oil cap also, so I am assuming there is a chain. I pulled the cover on the chain and there is a small pump in there that I am guessing keeps the oil lubed. But I will pull the rest of the casing to see what is in there for sure. Thanks

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]Sunway update; I took the battery to an auto parts to test, it was ok. bought some new 10 amp fuses. hooked back up and presto, cranked and cranked some more and finally fired. Soon it started and idled good. Took for a short ride and thinking, cool. Then decided to take longer ride and got about 1 mile and it seized up and then released. Lucky I was in front of a friends house. Used to have a kawasaki 100 that would do that when riding it hard.. Id pull over and rest it and it would start up and be good to go again. Now, I am wondering if it is not getting enough oil? if so could I just mix oil in the gas tank instead of adding to the oil reservoir? Any ideas? when I got it home it started again. Thanks Culli
