After I did the bbk and engine work, I needed a better paint job. It is currently black and there are a ton of scratches. Also, the paint has faded. So, I looked and decided on this color. Rustoleum Metallic...it's like a graphite metallic. Attachments:

This is what I used. Not pictured is all the sand paper I used. I also waited 2 days after spraying the Metallic base before spraying the clear. The metallic is hard to spray compared to a solid color, but definitely worth it. It has nice speckles in it and it gets mellowed out by the clear. Just like a car. 1 Adhesion promoter 1 Filler primer 3 cans of Metallic 3 cans of clear I just did the clear. So will have to wait for it to dry and buff. Attachments:

When I had my plastics painted we just used automotive paint and primer. Scuffed it quickly then sprayed.
Yours looks good!

Thanks! Yeah, I did a lot of research and watched a lot of youtube videos. The last thing I wanted is to spend time spraying and waiting, just to have it looking awful. The metallic with metallic flakes can give a non smooth feel, but the clear really levels it off and keeps it mild looking. I had to spray at least 3 layers of the metallic to keep it even looking. I also sprayed at least 3 layers of clear so it is thick enough to buff out.

I'm liking that color a lot.  I just did one of my scooters but I didn't wait to do clear or buff it. I look forward to seeing how yours turns out because I'm planning on doing my other scooter and I'm wanting it to look top notch. |

I'm liking that color a lot.  I just did one of my scooters but I didn't wait to do clear or buff it. I look forward to seeing how yours turns out because I'm planning on doing my other scooter and I'm wanting it to look top notch. So I waited a few hours for the clear to dry to the touch and this is how it looks so far. Can't wait to be able to buff it out. I also didn't want a cheap paint job or another flat/matte black look. There are a ton of Genuine and Vespa scooters here in Chicago, so I wanted to have a more "upscale" look to the paint. Attachments:

Nice. I bet she shines like a new penny when you buff it out. I may remove the plastics on the scooter i just painted and put some clear on them. I can see some difference already.

So, I got the buffing done. I used my Porter Cable 7424 I bought 10 years ago for buffing cars and it worked great. It's random orbital. I hit some of the panels a few times with the buffer and thought I would chip the paint, but it didn't. I am guessing the sanding, adhesion promoter, and the clear all help to resist chipping. Here is one of the panels. The pic doesn't do it justice, especially since it's in the garage. Rain expected for the next 4 days, so will have to wait for an outdoor pic. The paint has a deep rich wet look to it and it does shine. Plus, with the clear, if there is a little scratch, I can buff it out later. Woohoo. Attachments:
