Hello folks, I have an issue that I could use some thoughts on. My son informed me that the electric start and the gas gauge on our 50cc Tao Tao had stopped working but that he could still kick start it. We got him and the scooter home from school and the 1st thing I found was that the battery was dead. I charged it up and when I reconnected the cables I had some sparking as I hooked up the negative. Probably should have stopped there but I connected it and in short order heard a sizzling sound with smoke coming from under the front fairing. I quickly unhooked the battery and on inspection found that the connection to the voltage regulator had actually started melting. Does this sound like a problem with just the voltage regulator or might it be an indicator of a problem elsewhere? I will certainly have to replace the voltage regulator and hope to be able to find the wiring harness that connects to it but was interested to see if anyone had heard of or experienced a similar problem. Thanks for any insights.

Check all the connections and check the fuse on the positive cable should be in a little snap box. Make sure the grounds are connected good to they have a habit of not being tight enough. While you are going to have it apart anyway I would go through and do a full PDI and just check ALL the connections and replace fuel and vac lines.
It sounds like either the fuse blew out, the voltage regulator fried or there is a wire protrusion somewhere causing arch ( likely a positive wire, neg it should just shut down ).
Anyway that is my two cents, good luck and hope you get it back up and running!!

The fuze should have melted frist. Start at the fuse and see what value it is. Should be like 7 amps i'm not sure. If the fuze is open then no power can get to anywhere to melt/start a fire unless it isn't working right. So start there.
Second get a new regulator or 2 Ha Ha and you need to run a bypass wire to replace the melted one.
When the diode fails in the regulator they usually short out so this is probably what is happening. The diode/scr shorted and then the fuze should have blown. That didnt happen so why??? !! don't run the engine with the regulator out of the circuit,, There is no regulatoin and a high voltage will burn out lamps.!!
