Hello folks, I have an issue that I could use some thoughts on. My son informed me that the electric start and the gas gauge on our 50cc Tao Tao had stopped working but that he could still kick start it. We got him and the scooter home from school and the 1st thing I found was that the battery was dead. I charged it up and when I reconnected the cables I had some sparking as I hooked up the negative. Probably should have stopped there but I connected it and in short order heard a sizzling sound with smoke coming from under the front fairing. I quickly unhooked the battery and on inspection found that the connection to the voltage regulator had actually started melting. Does this sound like a problem with just the voltage regulator or might it be an indicator of a problem elsewhere? I will certainly have to replace the voltage regulator and hope to be able to find the wiring harness that connects to it but was interested to see if anyone had heard of or experienced a similar problem. Thanks for any insights.
