Ok how can I tell if the chan guides or chain tensioner are going bad. I was riding today and realized that I can hear the noise when under full throttle, it is not as obvious when the engine is not under load. I used to hear this type of noise on my Truck, then I found out it was the timing chain guides that were bad, which caused my timing chain to get worn faster and I had to replace it...
How can I check the tensioner, guides or chain for wear?

There was a sound coming from my scooter. I thought it was coming from the CVT side but later found out that it was the dashboard side of the speedometer cable o_P. I had to grease it. Afterwards the sound was gone.
Telling you this because sometimes the sounds may not come from the place that you think they do. Happens all the time with bicycles for example, especially the pedal area.
Zgr7- I agree with u it is hard to track down noises, but this particular noise seems limited to the cvt/ engine area...
So I started removing parts again to try and track down the noise. I removed variator and clutch, ran the engine and the noise still seems to be coming from the variator area- I think it may be bad bearing on crankshaft causing noise. I rotated the engine using a socket on the fan attached to the flywheel. It is quiet when rotating it clockwise, if I rotate it counter clockwise it has a grinding sound... This might be because it is rotating in the wrong direction. When I try to move the crankshaft on either side, it doesn't seem to have any play. I also drained the oil and I did not see any metal shavings.
Any suggestions before I start tearing down the whole engine... I would like to exhaust any other possibilities before taking out the whole engine.
If it is the bearing, is it easier to replace the whole crankshaft. Scrappy dog has one and I think it might be less headache to replace the whole thing... Open to suggestions
Yes I can hear noise when turning the fan on the flywheel counter clock wise, it is grinding sound when I turn it by hand. I took the cover off and turned it counter clockwise and clockwise, still only heard it on counterclockwise... I looked at chain and tensioner, the tensioner seems to be extended and I don't see any signs of irregular wear inside the head or chain area. My best guess is that the bearing is going out... Here is a video, it has a whining or grinding sound constantly now.
I re-linked the video in the first post. The noise I am concerned about is the constant noise that is loudest when I am near the variator. Sorry for the bad video on the video in this post, I was trying to get the noise.
Take the Valve cover off and see if your head has a CAM STOPPER, that is this piece and it will be on the right side of the Valve assembly. What that does is stop the motor from starting backwards and they are known to get bent or broke IF YOU turn the VARIATOR and or FLYWHEEL the wrong way. VARIATOR CLOCKWISE is wrong, FLYWHEEL COUNTER CLOCKWISE is wrong. Alleyoop

Alleyoop- I looked at the camstopper and it stops the spacer on camshaft when turning clockwise, counterclockwise it just lets it turn.... It moves the little spring loaded tip.
I never tried turning it counter clockwise before inspecting for this noise coming from crankshaft/ variator area. Not sure if it is installed correctly, or if it is damaged. It took no force to turn it in either direction. Now I know not to turn it counter clockwise... But I still haven't been able to track down the noise, and have only been test riding it short distances to find symptoms.
I am not sure where to get the correct gaskets for this gy6b motor... That is why I am waiting to take the thing apart. I took apart the clutch again and noticed that 1 of the pads is thicker than the other 2 pads, but I doubt this is the cause of the noise.

I know a little while ago there was a noise comeing from my variator clutch. I took it apart and 4400km the rollers were never changed!! U can imagine how FLAT they were lol sean

Ok inspected clutch pads and replaced it due to irregular wear on the pads.
Now it takes off slower with new clutch installed (it revs higher before grabbing), it is the same size clutch but the pads are longer than the original one. I opened up the clutches to switch the springs but the new clutch has smaller springs.
My question is: Are the clutch springs typically universal sizes? I want to try and get the 1000 springs, but don't want to waste money & time.
This clutch is for the gy6b engine so I believe it is larger than most. If anyone with 16" wheel has changed your clutch, let me know what you used. This one was purchased from scrappydog.
Thanks
