ON Cars,Trucks & Some Bike's in the late 70's early 80's... today most most parts are to cheep to rebuild.

It's extremely simple. Theres 2 screws and it comes apart but getting it back together is a PITA. You have to slide the brushes back while you put the armature back thru which is much easier said than done.
Also you may find that the cost of the new brushes is probably almost as much as a new starter. And if the armature is shot a new starter will most likely be cheaper.

Parts a so cheap for these bikes I would just buy a new one, then mess with the old to see how it works for the experience.

so i used finishing cloth to buff the commutator. and re wraped the loose wires around the magnet. put it back in. and it went REEENK and and stoped turning. it sounded like a squeeke door opening in a horror flick. new starter in the am. missin aborted.

Thats a good idea but I wouldn't use a razor blade,,maybe some fine emery cloth or light grit sand paper.Then a squirt of CRC electronics cleaner and a shot of compressed air too clean off the residue
