No Gas

Hi All,
I bought a tk50qt-9 scooter about a month ago. It had only 250 miles on it and looked to be in excellent condition. A few days ago I had a hard time starting it. Today it would not start at all.
I have gas in the tank but no fuel to the fuel filter. I disconnect the hose to the filter and no gas comes out. I tried cranking the motor and a little gas comes out, very very little. I'm guessing but something must be plugging or the fuel pump is bad (not sure if it even has a fuel pump).
Don't know much about scooters, this is my first, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, fasteddie

take the gas cap off and test for fuel flow again by taking the hose off the fuel filter and cranking it and see if more fuel comes out. Alleyoop

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto] Thanks for the reply.
I tried that, thinking that I may have created a vacuum. With the cap off, no gas comes out, if I crank it, a little, I mean a little gas drips out. Not enough to start the motor.

Check the Vacuum hose going to the INTAKE or a "Y" or "T" or straight to the INTAKE MANIFOLD for any cracks or kinked.
The other thing is to SUCK ON THE VACUMM hose and see if it then flows a good amount of fuel. Trying to find out if it is lack of SUCTION from the motor or a bad PETCOCK. Alleyoop

Check your vacuum lines, specifically the one going to the petcock

One other thing to do IF NONE OF THE ABOVE tests PRODUCES a good amount of fuel to come out. Take the HOSE coming from the TANK to the PETCOCK and see if gas flows out of the tank. It could be something in the tank that is blocking the outlet. Alleyoop Check which type of Petcock you have one like this" which would have a hose coming from the bottom of the gas tank to it: OR one like this which is actually screwed into the bottom of the outlet on the tank:

I took of the vacuum hose and it's in very good condidtion, no cracks and still soft. I sucked on the hose with it connected to the petcock and gas started to flow nicely. I have the one that you gotta screw into the tank. I'm sorta concerned here is because I really didn't do anything and gas is flowing again. I'm afraid this will happen again. Should I have checked the intake manifold? I'm charging the battery now so I haven't tried starting it yet. I tried the kick start but I really don't know how to do that either. Man, I got a long way to go. I return after the battery is fully charged, might take a while. The charger is very small, came with the scooter. Thanks again for the help.

If gas came out nicely when you sucked on it, then I think it may be time to adjust your valves. Set them both to .004 inchs. If it is loosing compression it will not create a lot of suction and effect the opening of the PETCOCK to allow enough fuel to flow and be hard to start and if it starts after it get hot the motor may not hold low rpms and die on you unless you keep giving it throttle. I got the scooter to start but can't keep it running. It starves for fuel after about 15/20 sec. I'm gonna try adjusting the valves. I gotta order the parts so this may take a few days. I'll post after done or if I need help.

Alleyoop, Thanks Friend. Today I checked the valve clearence, the intake was at 003, I made it to 004. Ex was at 004, I left that one alone. I also found a lot of loose nuts and bolts which I tightened. Spark plug was at 30, I left it alone. Put everything together and tried starting, wouldn't start, oops, forgot to put the plug wire back on. Retried starting and bingo!!!! Purrs like a kitten. Thanks to all for your input.

Sputtering. After I got done with the scooter it ran good for a couple of days. Now it sputters apon acceleration. More so on the load. If you hold the trottle full it get better but still a little sputtering. When I do it in the garage I smell a lot of gas. It starts fine, only upon acceleration do I have this problem. I haven't taken apart a carb for 40 years so I'm a little hesitant and I'm not certain that the carb is the problem. Any Ideas. Thanks.
