The best advice is to talk to the DMV. They will know the local laws.
Here in Utah, the size of the cycle you test indicates what size cycle you can legally ride. I tested on my 150cc scooter, and so I am limited to riding a 250cc cycle or smaller. Also, most MCS courses have an agreement with the DMV so that if you successfully complete their course, you don't have to perform the test with the DMV, and they provide the cycles, too.

I took my motorcycle license on my 150cc. They tell you they deduct points or fail you if your bike STALLS! Which is funny for a scooter rider to hear! I just practiced the course after hours at the DMV, nobody there. Watched this utube video and its still the same 4 exercises in a parking lot. There are 3 others just watch them and practice and its easy. I went there by myself practicing and taking the "road test" which is just a parking lot. Virginia get your permit, wait 30 days and practice. Then take the parking lot test. Also be prepared to pay for 8 years of license. I think it was 30 bucks.

I know here in FL there is a separate license for large sized scooters, and automatic motorcycles. A DL for motorcycles is valid for scooters, but not the other way around (I presume). I know because when I arrived with my scooter, the lady asked me why I did not sign up for the scooter classes. I told her because I was planning on buying a motorcycle; and needed to be able to ride with gears. There is either a motor cycle endorsement to put with your car license (Class E) or a motor cycle license here in Florida and thats it. Below 50cc your Class E covers it while above that motorcycle or scooter automatic or standard it is the MC Endoresment or License. For the MSF Basic Riders Course there are a few exercises that they skip when your on a scooter that requires a motorcycle license however that does not change the type of license. www.dmv.org/fl-florida/motorcycle-license.phpNow some DMV emplyees may put a restriction on your MC license stating "Automatic Transmission Only" however I have not seen that done yet and the MSF Instructors I dealt with when asked said they do not put a restriction limiting you to an automatic on your license if you take the training on a scooter.
