Has anyone here have experience with the Aprillia 500?
I did a web search but other than reviews (some positive some not so positive). Recalls? Problems? Service?
I am looking at a 2004 with 7K on the odometer and the price is $3,300.
If you have first hand knowledge please let me know. I am thinking seriously about picking this one up.
Thanks!

Keep in mind parts and other items will cost more. I have heard of no recalls searched and found nothing. DX

I have a 2006 Aprilia Scarabeo 500 with 39,000 miles, and really enjoy it. I have put about 26-33K of those on (forget mileage when I bought it).
There have been couple items which needed working on, but easy enough to find the shop manual (I have a PDF copy if need it).
Price of $3,300 seems little pricey. I paid $3,000 for my 2006 about 3 1/2 years ago.
Most major things that have happened to me was a busted original CVT belt (around 36,000 miles) with no damage done, and a gasket/spring combo that had to be replaced for the water pump, about 1,500 miles ago. Those, along with frequent oil changes (appr every 1,000 - 1,500 miles) and it's been a dream to ride. One other thing was fuse blew for the fuel pump. Took me a while to figure that out (didn't cross mind at all to check the fuse). When changing the oil use 15W40 and change the filter every 2-3 oil changes, not every time.
Did replace stock air filter with a K&N filter, put in Dr Pulley sliders, and add a full givi screen. Most everything else is stock.

I should have mentioned that the scooter is an Atlantic 500 not the Scarabeo. The last year of production for this model was 2004.

Just check that the service has been done upgrading the fuel system so that raw gasoline does not vent into the crankcase and dilute the engine oil along with the hotter thermostat installed and you should be fine otherwise you could loose the drive on the oil pump and be looking at some serious engine work. Great scooters once these two items are taken care of.
If Immobilizer equipped never use the last or master key to ride the bike. Stop riding it untill you get a few spare coded keys made up. The anti-theft system on the Atlantic is made so that the fuel injection, dash, fuel pump and engine control module are coded to match it and if you loose the key then it can be about $2,000 to have a dealer replace it all with a new matched set with coded keys.
The Atlantic was their Flagship Touring bike with stereo, self canceling turn signals, real ABS and an anti-theft system that made them impractical to steal.
Oh it is 9 years old and to me only worth about $2,000 tops if in perfect condition with the fuel system addressed very early in its life. If the fuel system/thermostat issue was not addressed or the Immobilizer key is not available then $400 to $650 depending on condition.

Thanks rockynv! That's the type of info I need to make a decesion. Stay safe. In the owners manual there is something interesting in that there is a competition mode referenced that is only supposed to be used during sanctioned races and not on the street. Aprilia owners manuals are avialable on-line directly from Aprilia at: www.serviceaprilia.com/public/lum/index.asp?l=Atlantic 500

Okay, what stands out in that video to me is it was the car DRIVER running the cam!
Gene, always always offer less. And like rocky said, ask if they made those repairs first before offering.
Keep us updated what happens!

Update - I did not buy the Atlantic 500. I found a 2006 Aprillia Scarabeo 500 for less money and with only 4,998 miles on it. Picked it up on Tuesday rode it home down Rt 128. Cruised at 70 with no effort what-so-ever. A good looking machine, has hard lockable saddle bags, helmet case, is well built and rides like it is on air. What a great bike, life is good......again!

You made the right call. I almost bought an Atlantic 500 too but I was concerned about all the recalls and how severe the potential ramifications were. Plus jeez, $3,300 is an awful lot. I was looking at an 04 as well with only 2500 miles for $2100
