So I finally broke my first belt today. It was on an older scooter with a fairly recent 83cc BBK installed and unknown maintenance history, so it comes as no big surprise (I was just about maxing it out at 45 MPH when it happened). Luckily it happened very close to home and it wasn't 100*F today My question is... in what manner do belts usually break? This one virtually just disintegrated into thousands of little fibers. I am wondering if it was just because it was old and over-stressed or if I may need to look into a potential clearance problem with the bendix gear before investing in a quality replacement. Any input would be much appreciated dawgs!

On a 50cc with a bendix right above the belt it is possible the belt is climbing to high and hitting the bendix gear. After you clean it all up and put a new belt on test it out. Leave the CVT cover off and rev it up and see where the belt climbs to.
Only way around that if you want the same top end speed without having the belt climb so high is PUT IN TALLER TRANNY GEARS and Little heavier weights to lower the rpms.
Or take the Bendix out(NO ELECTRIC START) and use just the kickstarter. Alleyoop

I've had belts break in all sorts of different ways. Usually i've found that the less they cost the more pieces there where.
I also noticed that the faster I was going when they broke the more pieces there where.

A 50cc vs 82cc is more than 50% more power that comes on the belt. The fact that it breaks in pieces, is because when a belt breaks, it slams around in the CVT case. Usually at high speeds, this causes more parts of the belt to break. If there where no case around it, I'd presume the belt would just flap out, with like 1 tear instead of in pieces. On the other hand, sometimes belts break, but one 'rope' (so to say) still is attached. This rope will pull the belt part behind it, and when it enters the variator or pulley under an angle, all kinds of stuff can happen...

Yeah since I was just about at top engine and wheel speed, it pretty much just got shredded into a million little fibers While I was pushing it up the hill I noticed a couple strands poking out of the vent hole. I studied the variator face today and it looks like the belt never traveled too high up to hit the bendix so I'm just going to shell out for a Bando and chalk it up to an old belt that had it's heart whaled out...
