Filtering?

It's my understanding that lane splitting and filtering are essentially one in the same. Splitting can be done when traffic is moving, also. But "filtering" is also splitting lanes. You can also filter when traffic is moving. This involves moving forward in and out of lanes to get through traffic.

I don't quite understand the reasoning that so called filtering is safer because traffic is not moving? Most of the danger of splitting when traffic is moving comes from the rider / bike, not the cage being passed. When splitting moving traffic imo you are very unlikely to get swiped or hit at the side as traffic is tight enough that cages are blocked in by one another, and they know it. So, you just ride between them in your own little lane. It's up to the rider to maintain the lane for as long as they are splitting

What is NOT safe is so called "lane sharing." This is when a rider or cage just rides alongside another vehicle in the same lane for a shorter or longer extended period without making a move to pass, or pass quickly enough. For obvious reasons this can be bad

But splitting moving traffic? Just ride straight and adjust as necessary. Watch for gaps as cars like to make quick moves into them, and pass traffic and be happy. It also helps for when cars do get close, or you get close to cars in other situations. And we realize a "close call" really isn't close at all. Avoiding impact no matter how close is the only thing that matters. Be it two inches or two yards a miss is a miss. And on a bike a two inch miss is a very good thing, indeed. Just as well as two yards imo. So that makes lane splitting more reasonable for some

Cagers have no problem ramming scootards off the road, but hate it, when stopped at a traffic light, and the scoot just zooms by. Cops hate it too.. I hate Miami cops..They should all go to a correction facility! Most of them are rotting in their positions, and need to be fired if you ask me!

Then they'll learn to be nicer to the ordinary person!

It's a damn shame that they scream and treat people like criminals for minor offences, while the guys stealing, and robbing places are allowed to go free (and no investigation is being done to them).
When they get lucky they bust a guy, but most of the time, they don't want to do the big jobs, but want to be the big man, in front of the ordinary guy, who is really not making any offense to anyone but them!

Out of my 4 encounters with the police, 3 of them where really bad, meaning, they are really bad at their jobs, and cause more harm than good!
Out of my 1 experience with a state trooper, I had 1 positive experience!
Almost like the state trooper was a human, while cops aren't!

Only a couple of cops doing security work in stores seem to be alright. But the so called 'law enforcement' often abuses the law towards regular people!

Hate them, hope this comes in the news, and many cops may get fired, or go back to school!

Some are friendly, but most are not in Miami Beach!

Lots of overpriced scoot rentals here, I laugh at them, as I zip by with my own, faster, ATM50; that costs me just $4 per afternoon on riding!

Just looked closer at that pic. Three things struck me--

1) They really ARE almost all scooters, aren't they?
2) Almost everyone is wearing a helmet.
3) Love the hot-pink car on the left!

Lane splitting is legal here in California... In stop and go traffic the thinking is, that if you filter to the front of the line at a light, the likely hood of getting rear ended and smashed between two cars is less likely. There is even a law here, making it against the law to block someone splitting lanes.
