After taking a little spill tonight and cracking my head on a hard gravel/packed dirt road, I realized that while my helmet is DOT (which means the company that makes it SAYS it passes DOT standard tests; it's an honor system) approved, it friggin hurt. All it is is a hard, white foam. Here's what I'm looking for and would appreciate your advice: I'll list what I want in order of importance, most to least. Must be under $200 Must be DOT approved, prefer Snell also Must be a gel-type/soft interior for greater impact reduction rather than just the hard foam Sun Visor or lightly-tinted shield included (not too dark to leave on at night) Modular Anti-fog or anti-fog insert included This is the one I'm looking at on Amazon but it lacks (from what I can tell) the softer interior, is isn't modular, and no sun visor: www.amazon.com/HJC-Helmets-CL-16-Matte-Black/dp/B003A9T9DM/ref=sr_1_2_m?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1365845508&sr=1-2&keywords=motorcycle+helmet+snell#productDetails

Check craigslist. I got a Arai helmet for 40 bucks used. I just picked it up in person had a big scratch on it but money in the bank.

had a big scratch on it . And who knows what other damage. Not very likely to offer any protection in an impact. The very reason he needs a new lid is because his has done the job they're only ever able to do once. NEVER buy a second hand helmet. You have no idea how its been treated. Ian

Ian It was a scratch on the decal not dented. I checked the padding mint and the guy said it was never in a wreck. It was scratched from being skidded across the garage floor. It was basically mint.

I was going to suggest HJC ... they are popular amongst riders, and rather affordable in comparison to Aria or Shoei.

You can design for the soft tap to the head when you fall of the scoot, but the helmet will be three feet in diameter and weigh twenty pounds. You aren't going to find them and you wouldn't buy one if you did. All that nice soft padding you are talking about adds nothing to head protection and you will compress it and still hurt if you wreck. Helmets are to protect the brain inside, and in order to do that in a reasonable weight and size envelop you are gonna hurt on the outside and possibly you will see stars when you get clumsy and fall off your scooter, but you will walk away from wrecks that would cripple or kill you without a helmet.

I appreciate all the responses. I got the HJC coming. Null, I don't believe that premise of yours. I played four years of high school football and we had two types of helmets; the one I started with just had this hard foam in it with a slick texture and when you hit somebody, you did see stars and lose hearing for a while if it was loud enough. When you put on the a.i.r. helmets, for example, the impact was much softer with no size increase; never saw stars while wearing one of those and never had that ringing pain like I did with the harder ones. I'm just looking for something that 1. will do it's job (most will, so that wasn't a concern) and 2. won't hurt so bad doing it.

Well, if you have not pulled the trigger I would highly suggest a look at the Nolan N103. I have the N104 which is a slightly newer model, but the N103 come highly rated for safety, is modular and considered one of Italy's "premium" brands. I love the N104 and have heard nothing but positive reviews from N103 owners. The new model I have is pretty close but has a larger viewing port and a couple other small changes. www.solomotoparts.com/Nolan-N103-N-Com-Modular-Metallic-Helmet-Black-Graphite/?utm_source=GoogleShopping&utm_medium=organic&zmam=92312807&zmas=1&zmac=1&zmap=39821_227031&gclid=CPGXvIy9yrYCFc1DMgod33cAGQ The Sharp site is a good source for some unbiased testing but not all helmets are covered and some are only available in Europe. You can find some really expensive helmets give you a much greater level of protection than others, but also find some very inexpensive helmets performed very well in their testing. It is my personal feeling to stay away from any model that does poorly, no matter how cheap it is. My first helmet does OK in the testing, a Scorpion EXO 700 is my full face, gets a 4 star rating and can now be found easily for $100.

howdy, my exo900 is also a good helmet though heavy and noisy. i do like the sunsheild that drops down with a wave of the hand and also like the warmth in the winter. will probably use my full face hjc in summer for cooler riding.
Lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

It was scratched from being skidded across the garage floor. It was basically mint. ?!! Who the does that with a helmet?! It's knackered mate. I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole. It doesn't matter that its never been in a wreck. I saw a test on TV showing two identical helmets, fresh out of the box. One was nocked off a scooter seat, and showed no outward signs of damage, not even a scratch. the other not. Guess which one failed when tested. It's your noggin, but unless you buy new, you might as well be wearing baseball cap. Ian
