In very, very few circumstances, and I would probably just take a shoulder. Traffic would have to be at a dead stop for an extended period of time. So, I guess my answer is probably not. In general, I don't think people are good drivers anyway, so this would be putting a lot of trust in their hands. Couple that with the number of people that you would make mad, and it doesn't make a lot of sense.
I would find it hard to believe that insurance would allow this to be legalized without a fight. If it were legal, you would have people that would be inexperienced, dare devils, or just bad riders that would try it and inevitably there would be an increase in accidents, claims, and I imagin hit and runs. As a car driver, I would be beyond pissed if a bike came through and took off a mirror or scratched my car just because they were doing something convenient for themselves.

it only takes one vehicle swerving a couple feet to avoid a pot hole or something else to put you on the ground. this is not safe... i would never do it.

There was an incident in the last couple years at a stopped for red light intersection where a group of bikers were run over by a truck stopping too late. I do not recall how many were killed or injured. If lane splitting had been legal in that area, the bikers would have probably been up front between the lead cars, and the truck would have only hit the cars at the tail if the lane. I would not likely split lanes at speed, because of reckless drivers and morons who don't think you should be able to slip through just because you are on a smaller more space efficient vehicle and will attempt to murder you. However, watching videos of Taiwan and such, seeing the scooters split up to the front and then leave the cagers behind on green, that does seem reasonable. EDIT: This is an article about the wreck, phoenix.gov/news/policebreakingnews/dump_truck_040610.htmlAnd I finally found some chatter about the possibilities if lane splitting were legal, (at least at intersection = 'filtering') www.msgroup.org/forums/mtt/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12447This article was also linked in the forum: jalopnik.com/5502943/the-phoenix-dump-truck-motorcycle-deaths-were-preventable

California Highway Patrol guidelines: www.chp.ca.gov/programs/lanesplitguide.html1) Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic 2) It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster 3) Typically, it is safer to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between other lanes. Note: the sport bikers in the above youtube video were not following the guidelines. Personally, I will not split if the cars are moving. I do not split if I will not gain. I watch my traffic signals ahead. Generally, in L.A., I can see three or four signals ahead. If at a red, and the next signal will also arrive at a red, why push it?

phoenix.gov/news/policebreakingnews/dump_truck_040610.htmlI remember this.. Wondering what the scene was actually like. Where the biker's stopped at the stoplight behind cars when the truck smashed into them? How fast (any brakes used) was the truck going when it hit? Why did the trucker not see the situation?

On the fence about this right now... I wish it were legal but then I do think its risky... well, you know what they say, "odds are nothing will happen"... but the thing about odds, "if their is a chance that it can happen then you can guarantee that it will happen."

I guess I'm just a risk taker in some ways... I think the points the guys in vid were making were valid and corrrect points... about the control you get when you allow yourself to split lanes.. oh well, its not legal here

I think lane splitting only seems to work in California. Everywhere else I have been the car drivers have been too undisciplined in staying in their lanes. The drivers tend to have the cars all over the place trying to get a look up ahead and thus they close up the gaps between the cars in the lanes. Then we have the pickup truck drivers all wanting extra wide review side mirrors too. Here in Texas you would be lucky if you could even walk between the cars in a stopped up traffic jam. The people just close up all the gaps front and back and on the sides. But in California on the freeways, the drivers seem to stay in straight lines better so you would have a chance at lane splitting. Now in downtown New York City the bicyclists seem to be able to zip in and out between the cars in the traffic jams so maybe they can do it there too, but I don't think motorcycles would fit though, too wide.
