Hi everyone! I am glad I stumbled upon this group! Our family needs to get a used scooter for second transportation, but I have NO IDEA how to get a good used one, if/what Chinese brand is good, etc. My husband is 230-250 lbs and needs to be able to make the 20 min drive to work and business appointments around town without breaking the bank. We live in a smaller town and there aren't any stores that sell used ones- only one store that sells expensive brands like honda and yamaha and I am not interested in spending over $1000 dollars on said scooter. We will likely have to drive to main city 2 hours away or main cities up north to get one- so any help on how to pick a good used scooter would be really helpful right now. If there are any links or advice about buying a Chinese scooter or used one online from somewhere please let me know. And please let me know if I can get a decent one in my price range of under $1000 - we want a scooter that will hold him over for a few years until we can get a better second vehicle Thanks guys! I feel lost right now so any direction will help me. PS I am doing this on behalf of my husband because he is establishing his own business as well as working a full time job.

Speed expectations- he hasn't mentioned whether or not highway speed is important. He said he wants to be able to get out of cars' ways quickly so he doesn't get run over. He is 230-250 lbs. Craigslist region - we live in st george Utah- vegas is 2 hours from us. salt lake region is 5 hours from us. Just saw this- thank you!

if the price was lower, would you recommend going for that schwinn scooter? the guy said he was motivated to sell. how much would you pay for it?

No more than $500 at most. Schwinns were pretty good for the time but I don't know that they would be a good idea for a steady, dependable ride. Have you thought about a motorcycle? Many older 250cc Japanese bikes would be a better idea for day to day usage.

My husband's little brother has a honda cafe racer that we could borrow...My husband said it is from the 50s or 60s and we can get specifics on it.
I am just so opposed to motorcycles for safety....I had a friend in high school who died on a motorcycle, my uncle got in several serious accidents on his motorcycle- helmet saved his life. I had a past boyfriend who had one and I told him he had a 1 in 1 chance of getting in an accident and he did get in one a year later and got rid of it. SOOOO.....I'm pretty against it. But if I can get one for under 1k it would really help us right now as far as money goes.
I thought the scooter might be a safer, more tame option than a motorcycle.

Safety wise, a scooter and a motorcycle are the same, I will say depending on the motorcycle it could even be safer than a chinese scooter, most people that crash is because lack of riding experience and/or over confidence, professional riding lessons can make riding a lot safer, riding responsibly and wearing safety gear can be as safe as driving a car. I have broken my tibia and fibula twice on a 150cc scooter, but I have never had an accident on my 250cc or 650cc motorcycles, the difference is that I was an untrained and overconfident rider when I crashes on the scooter.
