So I have a Taotao 50cc air cooled bike. The trouble is that when you try to start it with the electric starter it will take quite awhile to get it going but you can kick start it without any problems. Almost as if the petcock needs to fill up to supply the carb. But what gives if you kick start it? Starts every time while kicking.

Does the electric start seem sluggish?
if it kicks well but the electric is not enough.....
It seems to me like your leg is providing more power than the starter
so get the battery checked for cranking amps with a carbon pile load tester. it should be free at most places that sell batteries

yes that can be an issue. the brushes can wear out and sometimes the starter motor can fill with oil from a bad seal

Will have to check that out. If the starter taken off and allowed to drain and dry, would it work again?

So now I have a headlight problem. After we got it running the headlight blew out. Replaced the bulb and wiring harness. Still blew out and now the harness is charred. Got a new one and a 3rd bulb blew out. This harness is still like new tho. What could be causing this. I chased all the wiring and looks to be OK. Anyone know what gives?

check the voltage reaching the headlight socket, it sounds like your regulator rectifier, make sure it has a good ground too, it works by shunting some of the AC waveform to ground , if the ground is bad, or the ground from the fork area, is bad it will output full voltage at high rpm

The regulator/rectifier and stators on these taotaos are junk, good for maybe one riding season in my four years experience with them. Replace r/r, clean and retighten all battery/ground connections, replace stator/pickup coil. When replacing use quality parts. I recommend tvnacman(John) for tested-good, quality parts. |

i can second the bad ground causing lights to burn out
it happened to my johnway after a rain
the ground was loose and got rusted
