If you are like me, you watch the first 20 laps of the Cup race, go do some chores for a few hours, and return to the couch for the last 20 laps to watch the end. I actually enjoyed the Camping World pick up truck races better, because they were much shorter and less of a time investment. -Nascar has made a radical format change to make you stay in front of the tube throughout the 500 mile race. There will be 2 stage races and then a final stage that determines the event winner each Sunday. The stage races award points but the final stage awards much more. Sort of like motocross. It may work. www.nascar.com/content/nascar/en_us/news-media/articles/2017/1/23/new-nascar-race-format-2017-announced.html

Makes their advertising more valuable. The more folks they can say stay for the duration the more they can charge advertisers for the commercial time.

It's getting more convoluted each year.

Haven't been a fan of "turn left" racing since a kid. I might just check it out now though!

It's getting more convoluted each year. Have to wonder if this format change may have contributed to Carl Edwards exit?
A somewhat related comparison may be the NHRA drag racing 4-wide-format.

"Haven't been a fan of "turn left" racing since a kid. I might just check it out now though!" I prefer road course racing too. NASCAR is a better soap opera. "A somewhat related comparison may be the NHRA drag racing 4-wide-format." The NHRA four wide format frustrates me. I can't watch four supercharger explosions at once.
