I had the same variator problem. Took my time to get it off using an array of tools. I noticed the grooves in the variator hole nearly stripped out. There is such little shaft sticking out when i put the variator back on.
Is yours a high performance variator? Mine is. Maybe that's an inherent problem with a performance variator. Mine is Koso.
I figure the drive boss does not spin on the shaft, so if it's stuck it should not be a problem except when you want to change weights. I carefully greased the variator onto the boss so no excess could cause problems.

Whatever paint you use, put a coat or 3 of clear on top of it and let it dry throughly. It will give you extra protection and a gleaming shine, or not depending on the gloss factor you choose. I own a cabinet manufacturing company for almost 30 years, and we always clear coat after we paint.

So then when is over revving? Bwader said he saw 7800rpm's with 10 gram sliders. I've seen 6800 maybe 7000 on my bike. I can see Bwader is a pretty smart guy. Did he just have bad luck? Jeffery makes a good point about his lawn mower and generator comments, but obviously there is a peak RPM for each engine. Mowers and generators are built to stay below the breaking RPM point for each machine i would guess.
We seem to be pushing these puppy's to their limits. We are changing design specs, sorta entering new territory with each new add on mod. there has to be a limit. So i would like to know what everyone thinks is an acceptable maximum RPM for these engines? Did Bwader find it the hard way or are there others of you pushing 8000 or even higher, AND keeping it there for an extended period of time.
I would really like to know every ones thoughts on this. Keep in mind Bwader said his fail came at a much lower R P M.
Rockny makes a very good point. Lot's of smart guys on this forum.

Lol...lol...lol....funny stuff. Like i said i know you were excited to see how the performance changed your ride, i know i would be. I hate it happened to you, or anybody. Hopefully it will be an easy fix. Thanks. You made me laugh, felt good.
PS. you obviously know what your doing with that list of work you listed that you already did.
