If you live in the US, no, you don't have to tell them if you don't want them to pay, or if you don't think they will for whatever reason. With something as relatively cheap as a scooter, I can understand not wanting to file a claim to avoid increased premiums.
If you no longer need the policy, just call and tell them you no longer have the scooter and that you would like to terminate your policy. You don't have to give them a reason, but if they push, I would just tell them you decided to get rid of it. If you tell them it was stolen, they may take note of that even if you decline to file a claim.
Just as an FYI, if you recieved a citation or filed a police report due to this incident, the insurance company will eventually find out because they check those records periodically, and other companies will have access to that information for 2-7 years (depending on the situation), and may raise your premiums anyway. But, if law enforcement wasn't involved, you needn't worry about this.
Just a disclaimer, I'm not a lawyer, and any advice I give is merely from my own experience. Laws may vary in your location, so research until you're comfortable making a decision.

I call mine a scooter, though I don't think you're wrong to call it a bike. I think people just tend to picture a traditional motorcycle or dirt bike if you say "bike."

btw it has only one forward gear. It has what's called a "continuously variable transmission". While it seems to only have "one gear," that gear actually acts like multiple gears on a standard automatic engine. As your variator spins, centripal force causes the variator weights to go in an outward direction. This makes the variator squeeze the belt and the belt moves to a higher position, effectively shortening the belt. The change in belt positions changes the gear ratio as you accelerate, so that theoretically the most power is always being transferred to the wheels. So rather than having first, second, third, and so on gears, it's one continuous gear that changes as your speed changes. This is why variator weight matters. A heavier weight will force the variator to move at a lower speed, and a lighter weight will require a higher speed. I wouldn't recommend going more than 20% different than your stock weights, though. I hope that all makes sense, I'm not the best at putting ideas into words. -Cameron

The first thing you should do is weigh the ones you already have installed, and then go with a weight 10%-20% heavier or lighter than what came stock.
Go heavier of you're trying to get into top gear faster, this theoretically makes gas mileage better but may give you trouble under load and up hills. Go lighter if you're trying to stay in lower gear longer for better power and acceleration, especially up hill. Going lighter may make gas mileage worse, though.
It's hard to give a recommendation on weight without knowing what your stock rollers weigh.

I'm 25, and I appreciate the perspective that your post has given me. It's always great to learn something new and how the things that are taken for granted now weren't always that way.
Thanks, Cameron
