I recently had a similar problem, and ultimately it was my starter clutch that was going bad [and it ended up dying completely and i had to push the bike 2 miles home...fun times]. If the noise goes away when driving then that to points to the starter clutch, but does your bike give you issues trying to start it? Im sure you would have some issues starting it at times aswell if it is the clutch.

I used to have a Thunder 50 and as thescooterguru said, that bike is wired to have one light for highbeam and the other for lowbeam. However it is possible to wire it so that both lights work at the same time, in both High and Low beam modes - i did this myself when i had the bike since the default light is not enough for me. I never had any issues with both lights on, a large part of that is that the bike comes with a 8 pole stator whereas most 50cc's have a 6 pole stator, so it has that extra juice just waiting to be used and your battery should be completely charged...Just make sure to use heavy gauge wiring if you do the mod [id say 14awg preferred but 16awg you could get away with].  |

Hey Tortoise, first off Merry Christmas to you and the rest of the folks on this board. I said i would get back with you, and while its been nearly 2 months now...Well better later than never right? Anyways i got her all fixed up! I replaced the starter motor first, and i tested it with a multimeter and the positive connection on it was shorted to ground...So that was a problem, but the new starter motor did not fix the issue though. The problem ultimately came down to the starter clutch itself, which wasnt to difficult to remove really. So the bike starts up fine now, i only wish i would have bought a 20 spraag starter instead of the 3 roller that i bought, but no biggy. Cheers for the help though! Merry xmas etc.

Ill keep you updated, ill redo the grease tomorrow and go from there...hopefully its not a crankcase job. I have a 50cc laying dead since that job has me intimidated and may not be worth it [The crankshaft is bent on that one]. Regardless thx for the help.

If its the internal Starter clutch, does that need the crank case to be split open? If so thats a crazy job..I have a stethoscope for noise though so ill try that, hopefully its something simple [fingers crossed].

Thanks for the reply. I checked it out with a multi meter and my volts never went below 10.6V when trying to start it up. I fully charged the battery before trying, i will say though that it seems to start much better when i charged the battery up, but i had a difficult time starting it earlier today and it probably drained it abit. Thats probably why.

Hello, I have been having a issue with my 150cc Evo 150 Tao Tao scooter for the past two months. To give some detail about what i did to the scooter BEFORE the issue began to appear - I added a 11 pole Stator to it [works great] and DC LED lights to the front of the scooter. I put a performance exhaust on it aswell but beyond that I never touched the engine itself other than change the oil and add new gear oil to it. Now the issue I have been having which has been getting progressively worse over the past two months, is that when i try to start the engine using the electric start i hear a electric sounding "whining" noise. At first it wasnt bad, it would do that for a second then boom start up. Since last week however it can take up to 20 seconds to get it started, and today it took me nearly a minute...I thought she died on me!  Im assuming it is the starter motor that is the problem, since it does start, if it was the solenoid i dont think it would start at all...I took the Starter motor out today and looked at it, it looked ok to but i will attatch a picture of it and also a 15 second mp3 file of the sound it makes when i try to start it.
