I just bought a cheap '86 honda elite 80 on craigslist. For whatever reason, I always really liked this model of scooter. It ran alright for what little use it has seen over the past ten years, but obviously needed a good cleaning and new spark plugs at least. I have two days off work and the weather's getting really nice, so I'm going to get to work taking it apart. I should not here that it did run when I got it, and for about a week after that. It was always tough to get it to start unless I put a finger over the black tube pictured to choke (?) it, but once it got going it ran alright. I put a little seafoam in the tank and it ran very vigorously for an afternoon but when I tried to start it up again a few hours later, it didn't make it out of our parking lot. I think I might have loosed some gunk into the carb.. As a disclaimer, this is my first project with any engine bigger than a lawnmower. I've taken side panels off so I could have a look at the engine and I immediately noticed on the left side of the scooter (looking at it from behind) there's a small black tube with nothing attached to it (that seems to be related to air intake) and a large hole with two screw holes where something is not anymore. I tried to find this part in the manual, but could not locate it anywhere. I took the best pictures I could with my cell phone, hopefully it's clear what part I'm missing. sorry if those are hugeThis has me pretty confused, but the only other thing about taking it apart and replacing everything that's got me nervous is the back tire. The suspension spring (which I also need to replace) seems like it could get tricky. Anyone know what piece I need? Or have any general advice for taking my first scoot apart and getting it back together successfully?

Thanks Doug! I noticed on and downloaded that from the scoot dawg forum when it was active. And hello everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome. I am mechanically inclined, but this is my first project with a motor this size. I'm better with electrical stuff. I do have a question for anyone familiar with the elite 80. I've taken side panels off so I could have a look at the engine and I immediately noticed on the left side of the scooter (looking at it from behind) there's a small black tube with nothing attached to it (that seems to be related to air intake) and a large hole with two screw holes where something is not anymore. The suspension spring (which I also need to replace) seems like it could get tricky.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum and to scootering in general. I'm glad to see such an active community for scoots online! I just recently purchased a cheap 1985 Honda Elite 80 (I've had my eye on this specific model since I was a kid) that's been sitting in a barn for 10 years.
This is my first engine-related project and I'm excited to get my hands dirty! Because the scoot was so cheap, I've been buying all of the performance parts I'd need to restore it. I have two days in a row off this weekend and I'm planning on taking it apart and cleaning it from the inside out (only makes sense for an engine that's been sitting that long).
Does anyone have any advice for a first-timer? Some engine-related wisdom you didn't know when you started? I'd greatly appreciate it.
At any rate, hello! It's good to be here!
