Since this is an Intro, I'll just make it long and not worry too much about length. I'm long-winded...
My name is James.
Well, looking back at my profile, I joined in 2013. Was first member of Scootdawg with my same forum name... then here. I have used both forums for lots of info, as well as printed out for my Blue 2008 Linhai Aeolus 300.
(Anyone know the correct or close touch up paint?) I never introduced myself I don't think, but made one post back then. Don't remember the context.
What brings me here now to properly introduce myself is after a long couple years without riding my scooter for 2years and making a move to New Mexico... I am trying to get my scooter back in working order.
As I said 2008 Linhai Aeolus 300.
First bought after my father passed in 2012. (I'm now 51yr). I had retired from the USAF after 20yrs in 2007 to take care of my folks. Mom passed away in 2009, and my father in 2012. I have really enjoyed the scooter and used the forum(s) this and the previous for such things as adjusting my valve clearance, replacing the stock headlights with (I think 55/60W and changing some of the brake/indicator lights with LED's. Also, used the forums for info on going from rollers to sliders...upgrading the tires, taller mirrors that stick out a little more and I think maybe even risers to help with that, as well.
Now that I have moved back to New Mexico- originally a Texas native, but last place I was stationed in the Air Force was here at Albuquerque- I have moved here to be near my son and his wife and other extended family. This is my new home city as of Mar 2016. I love the weather here, can get hot, but not Texas muggy hot. Same temps, but drier. 100F+ last week or so with as low as 3% humidity... but often is in the 20% or so range.
Scooter right now is in pieces, well, as far as seat, seat bucket, go. Carb is loose from me trying to diagnose a problem before it started sitting as I had to deal with other things.
I had a problem where after 3-5 min of riding approx. the scooter would just sputter to a stop... sounded like it lost spark. 3 or 4 min. of sitting by the road would get me another couple minutes down the road as it would start back up- and repeat all of that again, taking me several instances of this to get from my house to a friends a couple of miles away.
Reading the forums seemed to lead me in the fuel pump direction. I changed out the fuel pump for a mikuni of some sort (vacuum), and the fuel lines, and fuel filter. I'm reasonably sure those things are still good- but will inspect before running. Ethanol gas might be crap now... But will run with easy access to those if I need to change them before going back into service.
However, when running the scooter on the center stand prior to setting the whole project aside- I was able to run it for several minutes, occasionally bumping the throttle for a few seconds. Eventually I got it to repeat the above issue. Further searching led me to believe that the CDI/TCI (seems to be almost interchangeable term regardless of which is correct) which was original, was heating up and cutting out, then cooling off enough, and would work again for a short time. So, I ordered one of those, still in a box and not installed yet. Also, read that it could be 'coil'.... doesn't seem too hard to aquire on the net if I need one.
Also, prior to setting it all aside for a couple years, I discovered that one of the throttle cables was frayed. The one that pulls when you turn the throttle...Ordered a set of both a couple years ago, also set aside to put in now when I get started again. First got the wrong ones... then the right ones...(with curved ends on one end).
So........
I would love to get back going again, and as I see it... here is a list of things I need to do... in no particular order...
-Change both throttle cables... one went, and might as well do both while it's apart.
-Swap out cdi/tci with the "new" one... maybe duplicate the problem again these two years later to see what happens...
-Buy new battery. I have info from old forum and also searched on the net for a cross reference of ETX9-BS 9ah batteries.
-Flush/Fill cooling fluid, gear oil, engine oil.... Make sure coolant is really 'full' by running it up to temp, with cap off, thermostat opens level goes down a little, add more till topped off a few times. Also, thermostat might stick after this long... who knows
-Get some of those windshield grommets that are so hard to find -Yamaha PN# 90179-05523-00 NUT,SPEC'L SHAPE , a few searches the other day seemed to bring up some sources online for those.... some with better prices than others. Might have to research the screw that goes with them.
-Other various screws that were in ziplocks, but got water in them and rusted- maybe or maybe not beyond re-using, but are mostly for body panels or seat bucket... they don't hold wheels on or anything...
- Look into JB Weld or something as one or two tabs on the lower body panels broke off... but are still inplace... I can just see thru the hole they broke...
-Look into PRI-G to run through the system as the gas is 2yr+ old... from what I've read has more PTE or whatever that secret ingredient is, than Techron does... Also, I can get "pure gas" here in town with no ethanol at one station for a few dimes more than regular costs...not worried about the extra cost as it only holds 3.2gal and I can fill up all day long and only burn a tank or more slightly for what my 1984 truck gets for mpg on 30 gal.
-I have the fuel gauge sticking issue...well, I assume it will still be there. I found instructions on the other forum for dealing with that... seems the metal washer they push on there was a little tight. Haven't decide to tackle that yet or not, because the fuel gause with riding does seem to settle into the correct indication after fillup or during riding no matter how much fuel. It just might hang at whatever level it was before filling up... but withing a couple min or so of riding as I remember... it settles at the correct spot.
- Altitude here is a mile, give or take... any considerations? or just find the A/F adjustment screw and adjust making sure it's smooth?
- Idle, adjust until the rear tire 'just' wants to start turning? Is that correct... it's been a couple of years...
- Would like to possibly put a K&N RU-1280 with pvc adapter in the air box removing the stock element , but leaving the airbox....as seen in

This parts cross-reference post from old forum has been a help for me. Hope the links to them are acceptable here.
These are all the high-spots I can think of at the moment.
Thanks for having me!
