Ok that's a little weird. One of the issues I had was they ripped the terminals off the wire for the horn but the wires were just seperated in the air. I have just put new spades on them and now when I turn the key on and off the clock stays on.
The horn only gets 3.8v a cross it

if the regulator is causing the back feed and it can, when you unplug it everything should go back to normal. On the ignition switch if your going to read voltage read from the red to ground (key off) then black to ground. When reading from black to ground (key off should be no power). When you turn the key on you should have power (black wire). Your calling a wire "stripe" what colors are the stripes? And what color doe it connect to on the other side of the plug. John tried with regulator unplugged, still the same just to confirm when you say ground do you mean put my multimeter black probe on the frame to ground it or use the green wire as i think that one is the ground one. stripe, it is a brown wire with a white stripe on it, i dont know what colour the old ignition wires where as they where ripped out but on the new ignition it is black with a white stripe. heres how its connected. Harness side has a red wire black wire green wire and brown with a white stripe. new ignition came with red black green and black with white stripe. i have connected them so they are matching i.e red to red, green to green, black to black, stripe to stripe

just took the plug off the regulator and noticed a small ammount of black marking on the pin for the red wire, it came off but did look like electrical burn. could this cause the issue i am seeing? i thought the regulator was only in use with the engine running.
i have just tried swapping to another known working cdi for my bike that didnt change anything, im going down the route of disconnecting individual items and trying incase its a bad part somewhere sending all power to ground (atleast im guessing thats whats happening since the clock goes off), tried with no cdi connected no regulator connected, no lights at all connected and tried with each one individually not connected, none of this resolved the issue and it still loses power when the key is switched to the on position.
any thoughts on what this could be? where do i need to start probing next with my multimeter?

One more problem... Battery is fully charged now and it's not that, if I have the key in standby position the little lcd clock comes on on the dash. If I turn the key to the on position the clock goes off and the bike appears to lose all power. Any thoughts, I wires the ignition up matching the colours red from the harness to red on the ignition black on harness to black on ignition etc thinking that the ignition switch changes them depending on key position I'm now thinking do they need to not match anyone got a 4 wire ignition I'm sure they are for the most part the same... Any help much appreciated!
