Interesting you say that. I wouldn't say its extremely irregular, but at times it's been varying, although not by much and not all the time.

Hi there, Hoping for some advice. My tao was not charging the battery. Relaxed battery. Replaced voltage regulator. Replaced stator. What should the voltage be at the battery terminal when at idle? I get "bouncing" on my meter from 12.8v and then drops to 7v,3v,9v and back to 12.8 why do you think I'm getting these quick drops? Short or bad ground somewhere? How do I test? Any incite?
Thanks! Yellow

Thanks for all the feedback. I might try using a second battery I have and charge inside. If that doesn't work too well I go for the stator upgrade

Hi,
Does anyone know the power output of the stator to the battery on a 50cc scoot? I have a chinese tao tao with bbk. Wondering if its possible to hook up heated jacket and gloves. The draw is 6.4amps for jacket and 2.2 for gloves, total watts :104. Is it at all possible to wire a second battery in parallel and have the stator keep up with this kind of draw?
Thank, Yellow

Hi guys, A little background of my scooter adventures. Bought a 50cc tao, installed 83cc kit, varitor, cam, cdi, wiring, removed the epa garbage, exhaust, high flow filter. All went well but had backfires when letting off the gas. By the time I realized the gasket where the exhaust met the engine was missing, the backfires had blown the back of the new exhaust out. I put the stock exhaust with gasket and stock airbox back on. No matter how hard I tried, I could never get the exhaust gasket to completely work. I would always hear the engine start loud, as if there was no exhaust, then quiet down as presumably, the copper gasket expanded. Fast foward to buying new exhaust again, but this time, instead of the ring style gasket, I bought the nyc performance flat gasket. At the same time, I changed my bendi starter clutch and bought a new battery. It now has a hard time turning the engine over, although it still does. Pretty much, I have 2 quick shots, tops, for the engine to start. If not, the brand new battery won't have enough juice to kick it over. The kick start works, but unlike before, it doesn't just snap right back up. It kinda slowly rises back. It also has the rare tendency the bounce back halfway through a kick. Sooo my question, did having all gaskets tight now increase compression? Is my new battery bad? Did I screw something up installing the starter clutch? ? Thoughts?
Thank you!!

I ran my Tao the same way for a while. You will need to really crank that bolt down tight or it will wiggle back and forth. I had to use a breaker bar with the appropriate socket to get more leverage. After that its been solid ever since.

Hey alley, So I went at it this weekend. Replaced the starter clutch. Wouldn't start until I eventually held my hand over the air intake and felt gas, guess it was having a vacuum issue but after that it worked fine. I later replaced the air filter with a high flow and a exhaust. I was really surprised to find that the largest jet i had (100) still turned the plug white. I drilled it out to a 105. Runs fine but hopefully its still not lean. I did another plug chop but couldn't tell too well as I ran out of new plugs. The only other issue I notice is that the kick starter raises slowly after pressed when before it would just bounce right back.

Thanks Alleyoop! It's A and I ordered a new one coming Monday. You're comment is very helpful, saving me alot of time diagnosing other things while I attempt to kickstart. Much appreciated!

The variator rotates and the kick starter turns the engine over but it won't start. It really all started with changing my main jet to a . Ran, then wouldn't start the next day. Pushed the electric start too long and I think due to that, broke the teeth due to more strain with increased compression of the 83cc kit. Swapped a fouled plug and still won't kick over. Wondering if the broken starter clutch is preventing the engine from running even though im kicking it over. Thanks, Yellowjacket

Hi,
I had a question. My electric starter started spinning and grinding so I attempted to start via kick start which would not work either (the engine will not start). I pulled the clutch cover and found that approximately 6 teeth were broken off the bendix starter clutch where the electric starter motor gears connect to. I understand that this is what is causing my electric start problems, but could this also prevent the engine from turning over with the kick start?
Thanks, Adam
