Hey guys. I've got a TaoTao ATM-50 scooter, and the drive belt in it broke, so I've tried replacing it. The problem I'm having is that when I get the belt on, it's - well, not right. Correct me if I'm using the wrong terminology, but the problem is when I get the belt on, the loop around the variator is "looser" (wider diameter) than the loop around the clutch. As far as I can tell, it should be the reverse. I don't know if this would be 'corrected' by starting the engine and running it, because I now can't start the engine. (Okay, note to self, try removing belt and making sure I can start the engine without it there...) I'm not sure what the problem is, though it looks like the belt may be in the way of the starting gear. If I've used the forum software correctly, there should be a picture attached of what it looks like right now with the belt on the variator and clutch. Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated. I'd really prefer learning how to fix the damn thing on my own to having to figure out how to take it to a shop. -- James

Thanks for the input, guys. ...Although now I'm nigh-utterly-confused on what fuel is best. ? 87? I'm a newbie at mechanical stuff; what's the deal with the two? How do they differ? How's the different behavior bad or good for the engine?

Hello, everyone, newbie here. Like many people in my area, I went and bought a cheap moped without thinking about anything or researching much. So, I got the scoot, did the assembly, and started riding. Didn't change the engine oil, or the gear oil. I'm now at about 460km, and have repeatedly run the scoot all-out. So now, only now, have I looked into proper maintenance. And I'm looking for advice. The scooter is a Tao Tao ATM50. If I understand correctly, what I need to do is: Change the oil ASAP (10W30?10W40? Scooter-specific or just motor oil?) Change the gear oil (80W90?) Use octane fuel (is ethanol content a concern?) I'm not sure what else. I read that the stock battery should be good for a year; should I look at a replacement, or just keep a trickle-charge on-hand? I've also read that I should replace the carburetor. And a recommendation to look for LEDs for the tail and turn lights, because of the weak electrical system. Any of this right? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.
