we had one nut wanting all companies, to make M/C helmets to be mandated to make anti fog visors by the govt. Absolutely fantastic idea. And people who say: Just give them more of an excuse to do so. If you don't like being legislated to, please feel free to move to a cave in the desert and love under a rock. Otherwise you're just making life worse for the rest of us. Ian EDIT: there's supposed to be another quote in the middle about insurance companies being scammers but pro-boards is rubbish and I can't get the code right. Sorry if its not showing up.

Ian, I quoted the wrong quote; the one I was trying to quote has been inserted into my last post... just hit the wrong button. Lol, that's cool I have "sausage finger" moments occasionally myself! I know what you mean, but in some way, what I just said is true too (eg: when a crashed rider with helmet slams into a pedestrian, compared to one that wears very little safety gear). Lol. I remember a quote from somewhere, that said something along the lines of, "The only way to make car drivers drive more responsibly is to put a ten inch steel spike in the centre of every steering wheel". Like we both said earlier, even the best kit won't protect you from everything, so there's still enough of a threat of death to make most riders ride responsibly (unless they've got one of those airbag suits I think Honda were developing-I'd get one, but knowing my luck it'd go off on its own and I'd end up riding home looking like the Michelin Man lol). I'll leave you with an anecdote from all of two weeks ago. I was just getting geared up after work to ride home when one of the team leaders came in to drop some stuff off for his locker, having been out on his "proper" bike all day with friends. One of the group was "pulled out on" (you know when a cager just pulls out of a side street without looking-I'm sure we've all experienced that) and didn't have a hope in of stopping in time. The sports bike was a total right off (it'd just tried to go through a Volvo after all) and the rider had to decelerate from 60mph (a speed easily achievable on my 125 scoot), using nothing but the roof of the car, the road, and his kit. He walked away with a broken collar bone and a broken wrist. There's no way the OP of this thread, in jeans and a T-shirt would be out of hospital by now in a similar situation, if he wasn't killed outright. Ironically, the guy was the only one of the group wearing a hi-viz vest over his kit. So it just goes to show, it doesn't matter how well you ride, or what you're wearing, there'll always be that one idiot that tries to kill you and you can only hope you're wearing enough protection when he/she does. I've really enjoyed this debate (even if its taken the thread, ever so slightly, off track! Lol). Hopefully our polar-opposite-opinions haven't caused too much offence. Even though we don't agree, I think we kind of get each other now. Maybe you Crazy Americans and this Stuffy Brit should meat up for a ride one day!? Lol Ian.

Actually you can stop them smoking. It's illegal in the entirety of the UK to smoke in confined public places, and they've started rolling out the mandatory covering of cigarette stands in shops. I believe that's a process that was started in the US? As for fast food: they've already banned those stupid "supersize" meals that were death in a bun. I personally believe that cars are only safer for the occupants. For every other person on the planet they're significantly more dangerous. Maybe they should ban cars? But that's a side issue. Crash testing, seat belts, basic safety standards, through life vehicle inspections, etc, have been the legal norm in the UK for a significantly long time now, as well as in most developed countries. Why not similar protective standards for the operators of two wheeled vehicles? I have to legally drive a road worthy car and wear a seatbelt, why not make me legally wear protective equipment on my scoot? Simples. Ian

Tell me, if I'M confined and can do all that, what are you? Slight crossing of the wires I think: that's exactly what I was saying. However, will you wear full body armor, or will you wear only a helmet? Full body armour. Every time. And it should be legislated so. Ride as defensively as you like, but there'll always be the idiot you didn't expect. I'm not armouring up because my riding is dangerous. I'm armouring up because I see an empty road and think, "Where's the idiot I can't see over a blind summit, round a bend, or in a concealed entrance?". As for temperature, I've experienced plenty of Floridian summers, and it's no reason to not kit up. There's plenty of mesh armour kits on the market, which while not as comprehensive as full kit, would be sufficient to keep the main contact points off the road. An open face helmet is always better than nothing. Again, you've given me no good reason to ditch my kit, other than, "I wanna". Ian

Had a brilliant one this morning on the way home from nights:
The road is mostly a 60 limit, with blocks of 30/40 through villages. The first village out I was behind a cager driving "erratically" shall we say: not indicating, slowing down, speeding up for no reason, swerving pointlessly. So I took the opportunity to blast past them when they slowed again and sat in front of them. I didn't filter through traffic, I just overtook them and stayed put inline.
We got out onto the 60 section and I stuck to my guns in the "centre of road wheel rut" (right hand wheel rut-in UK), until I came up behind a lorry that reduced my speed to about 50. I had to hang back a bit as the lorry was shedding muck and making road spray, so the cager started tail gaiting me, before trying to overtake, straddled the centre line, then realised there was on coming traffic and practically ran me off the road pulling back in behind the lorry.
At the next village there was a set of traffic lights at some road works, so I took the opportunity to get past the cager and the lorry and settle into the queue.
It was another 20 miles before the cager caught up with me and turned off another exit at a roundabout. There's nothing better than riding home from a night shift during the morning rush hour, sharing the roads with all the cagers who didn't get out of bed early enough, while I've literally got ALL DAY to get home! Lol
Stick to your position on the road guys, it's more fun than you'd believe!

Not far enough if you ask me. In the UK it's a legal requirement to wear a government approved helmet, even on a 50. That doesn't go far enough.
Some one may not have a spouse and children, but I've never met anyone yet who hasn't had a mother and father for at least part of their lives. Friends. Brothers and sisters maybe. Everyone has someone who's going to be affected very much indeed by their injury, disablement or death.
To say that protective equipment only protects against road rash is quiet frankly ignorant. Nothing will save you from every injury, but the majority can be prevented with the correct equipment.
As it stands, there is nothing anyone can say, or demonstrate, that would get me off this high horse and stop me looking down my nose at people who can't see that what they're doing is idiocy. Freedom can kiss my rear end (and that of the horse) if it doesn't involve responsibility.

As long as it does not mean other people suffer, I think no one has a problem. . Oh no, of course, as long as no one else is affected. As long as the emergency room staff and paramedics aren't affected by trying to figure out which lump of burger meat is which limb, as long as no one is affected by road closures for scene of crime investigations, as long as no ones health insurance premiums (in the US) go up, or public money (in the UK) is spent to cover your injuries, as long as no ones motorcycle insurance premiums go up, as long as your family isn't affected by either looking after your crippled , or burying you in the ground, as long as the rest of us who do kit up, don't have to watch appeals by grieving families of some one who's smeared themselves across a road, and as long as those of us who do kit up aren't tarred with the same "only reckless idiots ride engines with two wheels" brush........then yeah, do you whatever you want. It seems people these days (especially in America, but it's by no means isolated to there) spend a lot of time talking about and defending their "freedoms" but spend very little time, if any, acting on their "responsibilities". I think my enthusiasm for my TMAX is showing. Lol. It's kind of hard not to get enthusiastic about these babies! Thanks for the info, I'll bear that in mind if it ever comes to a new scoot. I was in chatting to the local motorcycle shop owner today, while his mechanic was fixing a puncture for me. He showed me a Kymco.........something........300, that was very nice. It would also have the benefit of keeping my £££s in the local economy. Thanks for the info. Ian

I have been hit by mirrors and kicked a few dents in doors . Don get me started!!! Lol. I was involved with an online discussion with my local police once about road safety and cyclists. One idiot cager posted something along the lines of, "I always give cyclists plenty of space, but they still kick my car and try and knock my mirrors off." The police posted back, "Oh well, we'll always try and investigate crimes against property such as this." Even after an hour of me trying to explain, they still didn't understand that if you're so close they can kick your car, YOU'RE TOO BLOODY CLOSE. Idiot cagers. Ian

Obviously for the UK it's "how far left", but I used to sit in the left hand (right hand for US) wheel mark on the road, where my scoot (125) is only just keeping up (on 60 roads).
I don't do that anymore. I found that if I move over to give cars space, they don't bother to pull out as much when they go past.
Now I sit in the middle of the lane. If they want to go by, they can pull all the way out and go past. Or they can wait.

Thank god I have lived a better life than those who live in fear. Have you really? Cause I've been free enough to come off a couple of times, but never had to spend time recovering from the most avoidable road rash. Unless of course pain is freedom, I'm sure you enjoy the freedom of slamming your pecker in a door. After eight years in the forces, I've had plenty of fun, and lived without fear in some fairly fearful situations. So much so, that I don't see the point of needlessly risking my life for no reason other than proving how big my ego is. Have fun being jet washed off the road. Ian

I got rained on tonight as well mate. Makes a nice change from snow for this week! Lol. I was nice and warm in my new (to me) motorbike trousers. I just need some decent boots now! Ian Got the medium high output bulb which throws 25% more light but still gives respectable life. Original lasted 14,000 miles so if I get 25% more light and 7,000 miles from this bulb I will be happy. That's interesting. I find my full beams are great, but my lows only cast out about ten foot in front of me. So when I dip my lights for oncoming traffic, I'm practically blind. I'll have a word with my mechanic tomorrow about replacement lights when I nip in for a little job. Thanks for the heads up mate. My commute is 45 mile each way, just over an hour up to 60 (75 on one downhill stretch if the winds in the right direction! Lol). My feet were dry in steel toe cap work boots, but still cold. Luckily I'm on nights for two days now, so riding in some daylight for a change! Ian

You could have given her a wash for her big forum debut! Lol
I like it, I like it a lot. What cc have you gone for this time? 250 again? If you don't mind me asking, do you ever get the Mrs on the back as well? How does it perform as a "bicycle made for two"?
I've got two years to upgrade my licence, and three years of finance left on my 125, but I've fallen in love with scoots now and I'm kind of liking these or the Burgmans.
Nice scoot, thanks for your info! Ian
