I almost don't even want to tell you guys... So i have been having some electrical problems, which causes me to use my kick starter all the time. I dont know about yours, but my kick start flips up to tuck it away when not in use. I had been leaving it down because well, why not? Annoying Variator noise? Leave your kick start in the upright and locked position... Also worth noting that the sound is the just it vibrating in its loosened state, and there was zero contact being made with internals.

C'mon, someone out there has a 2 stroke 50 that they WOT. Do your.... "parts of the bike that turn the energy into usable movement"... make a little rubbing sound when it is maxed out? Arn't these things CVTs? I hear the term Variator but that seems exclusive to scoots, the varitor being the forward apperatus, the clutch being the rear? Terminology is key to communication, i know. But i don't know the terminology

Greetings!
So I removed the ring from my Variator to allow a higher top speed.
This has worked beautifully.
However I am noticing something now, I can’t say for certain that it wasn’t there before… but there is a sound coming from the variator.
If I go full throttle and reach my current max speed, shy of 40mph, I begin to hear a faint metal on metal sound, akin to maybe… a cook sharpening his knife on another knife; shing shing shing? Nothing too bothersome, just a faint metal on metal sound. Changes in frequency of shings can also be noticed, it might be one shing per second, or maybe 3 every 2 seconds, noticeably faster.
There are only 2 things that are involved with removing the ring, a C clip and a reverse threaded nut for the kick start, because of the reverse threading I can’t imagine it is loose, it would simply tighten itself.
Does anyone else hear this shing noise when at top speed?
I’m considering just taking the cover off, starting it, and looking, but my real question would have to be… is this normal? I don’t want to try and fix something it if is working as intended.
Again the sound is not present during positive or negative acceleration.

Sorry for not posting but i have been super sick, like worse ever in my adult life, now that i am recovering i can do some light work on the bike!
OK SO The Hyosung Racing Prima as well as many other "SF50" style scooters, have 3 forms of restriction, i think. The CDI. A plate in the intake And a ring in the variator.
The CDI is in the front, it has 2 wire clusters coming out of it. one with four, one with two. The cluster with 4 is what we are after. Some say go in through the light but that would seem a nightmare, just take half a dozen screws out to let the entire front panel off. Mine has a brown, blue/white, black/white x2. Yank out one black/w and plug the cluster back in, i get no start. Plug that one back in and unplug the other one and the restriction is gone. If you yank out a black/w wire and it still starts, congrats, you did it right the first time!
The intake plate is visible from the outside of the bike, its a thin piece of metal restricting intake size, sandwiched between a flange and the engine. if you take out the seat/bucket you are looking straight down at it. 4 brass like screws on one end and 2 nuts on the other hold the angled peice in place, take it off to reveal the plate.
The ring is inside the variator? behind the kick start. Remove the cover, remove the C clip, remove the REVERSE 22mm nut, slide off the plate behind it to expose the belt. The belt will have a ring under it. remove ring, put it back together.
When i cut the CDI wire it seemed to only allow me to go downhill faster.
When i removed the intake plate, nothing seemed to happen as far as i can tell. I'm thinking this will be more evident once i start upgrading a few things. Exhuast, jet,and weights.
When i removed the ring i unleashed the beast within and reached a blistering 37mph on flat!
I am still having some minor electrical problems that go away and come back. Which leads me to believe its simply the battery.
Fuses are good.
Hopefully i will get into the DMV next week so i can start taking her out more!
Really though, going from 28 to 37 mph by cutting a wire, and removing 2 pieces is great!
I think i will hold off on the performance exhaust until i get the thing cleared by CA highway patrol. I also need to ensure that my electrical problems will not occur while they are checking my turn signals! It sounds like i'm going to have to go through that considering all i have is a Certificate of Origin from 2007, from a dealer in MO.
I wouldn't have thought tires make much of a difference! What am i looking for in a good tire? An increase in size would mean an improvement of top speed, but it must be more than that? Prices on them very dramatically too. Otherwise i guess i'd do the same thing i do with my cars, whatever is cheapest. I wouldn't want to spend hundreds so i can scrape my knees on the pavement or anything.

[replyingto=scootnwinn]scootnwinn[/replyingto]This completely agrees with what i have been reading.
Often i am hearing things referred to as "The Pipe" Gotta be an exhaust pipe?
I think the best way for me to do this is get my hands dirty. Although i do love me a good manual. But where would i find out what engine i have?

You guys have an awesome forum, and the old one has a huge wealth of information too. I’m sure it will all be crystal in a few weeks, but right now a lot of it goes over my head. One thing I am confused about is how everyone kind of refers to the exact same things, but they all have different scoots!? Or something? Are all the engines pretty much the same? (all of them probably get cease and desist letters from Honda daily right? Haha) I’m interested in seeing a manual of my engine, parts sources, etc. so I can shop around and put pictures to names of things. I know the engines are simple as can be, so it will just be a matter of time. There is so much plastic! WHERES THE CARB?! Lol jk... maybe.

Been doing some research and it should totally be worth it!
But then there are all kinds of things that actually squeeze pretty huge margins of performance out of the thing!
First thing I will do is get some good oil, gas, and do the CDI wire thing. I like the idea of cleaning the carb, but if I’m going to get at that I might as well do some other stuff too right??!
Now, I guess I would ask where do you think the lowest cost/biggest performance gains are? People are saying exhaust is a huge gain, but is that before or after making the other modifications to allow a free flowing exhaust to benefit the engine?
I would also like the first things to kind of get my feet wet with the engine itself. I’m not looking for a big bore kit or anything, just some simple things like plates/washers that can be removed without causing imbalance or decreased life, in addition to minor parts to help tune the modifications made. Anything I can do to increase life is of course a good thing too.
Lets say you had my scooter and a tiny bit of cash, say… less than $200, what would you do?!

She is a two stroke. I had to true the wheel on my pedal bike, so i didn't get to work on her last night. I'd rather not risk a citation which costs more than my scooter!
I am going to put some hours on her tonight though, and will post back with my actions and progress!

Uh oh, might not be as legal as i thought. Kalifornistan seems to have some stricter regulations than i anticipated. Looks like i need an M endorsement and registration to drive on street regardless of how small the engine is. Best i take back way home.

alright sweet, so no worries about break in metallic sediment? That makes things easy eh?
Clean and adjust carb is explained in the PDI, so that will get done.
Poking around it looks like i just need to switch around a wire or two to stop the 45kmph limit. That should be plenty enough... for a while.

Need to get the plastics off and take a look at what i'm working with. I have never had an Oil Injected engine before, is there a dipstick? I want to drain the oil ASAP, will have 80km of 7 year old oil now. The manual says: Use reccomended oil. Whats reccomended haha? It is bright blue, akin to a weed whacker... I think that should be one of the first things i do. Are the other fluids critical for changing? Is there a good source for engine documentation on these chinese things? Like a manual for my specific one?

This morning everything functioned. Blinkers, even the push button start! I saw the fusable link by the battery, looked fine, anyway it works now, silly me i didnt even look at the gas needle before coming in to work.
Caps out at 28mph for sure. Which is what i read. Think i can get her past 30?
I will have to check out that PDI article at lunch.

Just bought my first scooter.
2007 Hyosung SF50 Yellow Will upload pictures during daylight.
She had 60km on her when i bought it, and now has 68km, here is my first take.
It had no battery so i purchased one, charged it a bit and put it in. It didnt start or even pretend to with the button. But! After a dozen kicks it came to life and has started with the first good kick since.
I dont think the turn signals work.
It said it was near empty so i totally spilled gas because it was already full. maybe, 75c in 15c out. no movement of the needle.
So i'm thinking my trickle charger is broken, i will test battery in daylight.
She will die now and again, increasingly infrequently, when going from speed to stop. She starts right up with one kick and off you go again, feather it and it won't die.
Short residential blocks here, haven't gone past 25 or 30mph. I read someplace that it might be restricted at 45kmph?
Speed limit to work is 35mph and its usually slower. Maybe... 5 or 6 miles each way.
I know that 60km is nothing. and 2007 was 6 years ago. It appears to have been kept 100% in a garage in california. But i still have break in concerns.
I think i got a good deal at $500?
I will learn to change the oil and do that because of the shavings. Is there anything else i should check out too? Bolts might need tightening?
I'm thinking some of the problem could be the 3/4 tank of 7 year old gas, restriction, and battery being totally dead causing the entire hand console thing to not work right.
Oil injected, ?
If it is capped out at 28mph i would like to remove that, so i could hopefully sustain 35-40mph. It feels sturdy enough.
It is bright yellow and you'd have thought it a pony if you'd seen the look on The Female's face. It honestly seemed to preform no different with her on the back. She is smaller than me, and neither of us big, but still.
I have tools, extra cash not so much. I am confident with doing work myself.
That should be a good start, all over the place, but that's why we segregate threads right?
