Hi Guys
Even though this is my first post, I'd just like to say thanks for all the help so far. The advice that I've found on the forum has made me a lot more knowledgeable on the scoot and fixing it.
Its a 125 GY6 with the headlight guard / cage thing over the headlights. I can see it a few times in the pictures scrolling at the top of the page.
I'm having a problem with it cutting out. It seems to be after it gets warmed up. Starts easily straight away off the button and rides with no problems for about five-ish minutes.
When it dies it will not restart for a few minutes, but once took a few hours before it would restart.
It dies at different RPM, sometimes slowing down, sometimes accelerating and other times just cruising on a steady throttle. When it dies, if I twist the throttle I can hear the tone changes, so the fuel is still going through.
When it dies, there is no spark.
Before coming across all of the advice on here, I started off replacing parts. I changed the CDI (nothing different happened - same issues) then the ignition coil (same issues) then the spark plug lead and cap (same issues).
I've checked that fuel is getting through the petcock as its meant to, and the carb has been stripped and cleaned. All of the jets are clean and there is no gunk in the bowl. Checked these things just to be safe and tick it off my list.
Then last night I got hold of a multimeter and did all of the tests on the electrics. I did these tests twice, once when everything was cold, and another time once I was in 'no spark' zone.
Everything measured fine and within spec for both of the tests, except the red/black wire from the stator. For the cold test it measured around 87-90vAC (20-100vAC is recommended from what I believe?), but when in 'no spark zone' it only measured 0.6-2.1vAC.
I'm sure that this is my issue, but just wanted to confirm before I invest in a flywheel puller and stator.
Does the stator fail with heat? It seems that once the engine is up to temperature the stator does not give enough power to the CDI, and therefore the spark dies. Is this correct?
Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?
The blue pickup wire has good signal all the time, warm or cold.
If it is just the stator that's the problem, is there a way of knowing if I have a 6 or 8 pole without removing the flywheel? If its a 6 pole that I have, is there an advantage to going with an 8 pole? Is it a straight swap?
Thanks for any help, and hopefully I haven't rambled on too much, just wanted to get all of the information that I have across.
Chris
