We fairly recently had a few motorists open their mouths and had it end up in a news worthy manner. One shot, one chased down and another knocked/run over along with his wife.
Yes we are free however this is what the instructor told us in our big rig safety class. "Don't confront and mouth off to someone who is being stupid or irritating, potentially developing a really bad life long or life ending relationship with them, when you will most likely never see them again for the rest of your life. Why make a momentary irritation and tale to tell over the dinner table or a campfire into something you may potentially pay dearly for with your life?". Call it in and drop the dime on them when its safe for you to do so if the situation really warrants it.

You know, Jer, even without tags he's still call-in-able. You could stop and call in there's a dangerous driver on Main Rd, just crossed 1st St going east. I did that on a car who ran countless red lights, cut across lanes, and quite honestly had to be high on drugs to be that completely utterly disregardful of EVERYone around him. All I had was vague car description and direction/road where I last saw him. Police took all info and was going to look for him. I told them it wouldn't be hard to figure out which car he was if they just watched for, like, 30 seconds....

LOL. Just had a pickup start to pull out from his stopped lane into my moving lane last night on the way home. He head was hanging out his window and I heard him yelling a not so nice word at me as I minimally swerved around him. Could have stopped or not but I knew cars were behind me somewhere so kept going. 50 yards up and a red light. Pulled into the left turn lane and watched my mirrors for the dude, on the ready. Luckily he stayed in the straight lane and pulled up further than i was while we waited for the light. Had he said anything as he rode by i would have ignored him or just waved. Had he actually stopped next to me and confronted me...well that's a different story. Still don't know what he was thinking or what he thought i did?. All I know is there are a LOT of crazies out there!

Not on my scooter, so even worse.
Guy behind me was tailgating as we got on the ramp from 435 to 35. Still lots of cones and concrete barricades, so we all--well, most of us--go slow through it. I checked my rearview since cars ahead of me were braking and I was slowing. Saw idiot looking down to his right. His hand appeared, holding one of those BIG big gulps, or a small 2-3 liter thermos. He proceeded to chug it WHILE MOVING while tailgating while in a construction zone. I'm flashing my brake lights and glancing ahead while mostly watching him and slowing as much as I felt I could without idiot rear ending me. I COULD NOT SEE ANY PART OF HIS FACE WHATSOEVER! Which pretty much means he couldn't see much of my car either.
If he'd gone fast after we merged onto 35 and passed me, I would've taken his plate and called him in. But he must've still been too busy chugging 'cause he never picked up speed.
Now, maybe--MAYBE--he was just so darn dehydrated that he realized he would pass out if he didn't get fluids into him immediately that very split second. Or maybe he was just about the stupidest idiot on the roads at that time.
Anyone care to guess which I think is was?

In dade and broward county, i just drive like a cautious, mind my own business commuter, everyone down here has a ccwp or a gun thats unregistered under their seat... or worse, does not speak english, and is driving around with stolen or fake plates and no lisence.
When i was in a car, i got into fights with people, rammed peoples cars with my car, and got jumped or my wind sheild smashed... but after i got a gun pointed at me and my son was born, i just keep a cool head and stay very aware on my scoot and keep my go pro running while i ride.
Let the hooligans get themselves killed jerry, we shall live to ride another day.

My bad week was last week and I didn't incite anything and didn't even have a chance to say anything. I was cruising down a 4-lane split boulevard on my 150cc scooter around 6:45 AM last Wednesday morning. I was heading to my local convenience store for my usual breakfast sandwich and donut when all of a sudden a car shot out from a side street and onto this main road right in front of me. I have to accept a little blame on this one, because I wasn't as focused or observant as I should have been. This sudden appearance of a vehicle turning right into my path startled me much more than it should have done, which then caused me to respond a bit too much and a bit too far as I swerved to avoid the crash. The next thing I saw was my front wheel hitting the curb/medium that divided the northbound lanes from the southbound lanes. I don't recall exactly what happened next or it may have been that I wasn't exactly there to remember, because my next memory was of me getting strapped down to a board on a gurney and then getting loaded into an ambulance. I do remember being concerned about what the police would do with my scooter. Hats off to Des Moines' Finest for walking my scooter a couple of blocks down the road and parking it right out front of my place. As you can see from photo, I wasn't looking real handsome after this accident. I live in Iowa and we don't have a helmet law, but my daughter and my grandkids (twins - boy and a girl aged 4 years) aren't going to allow me to ride again without proper head protection. It's kind of hard for me to argue with them, especially since I came pretty close to busting my head open like a rotten pumpkin. Damage to my scooter: a couple of cracked and broken body panels (cost=$100) and the steering stem triple-tree has one side that is bent and twisted (cost=$65). So $165 in parts (free shipping for over $100) and some serious healing of my head, face, left arm (road rash), and right knee (twisted/sprained it bad) and it'll all be better or as much better as it can be. Sorry to say, Jerry, but I think your week was pretty good in comparison to mine, but I'll let you be the judge of that. Keep in mind that this photo was taken nearly a week after it happened. This is me starting to look a LOT better.

Hey silly, I'm glad you came out relatively light on damage. Your daughter and grandtwins are right, you should always wear protection. You should check into a nice mesh jacket while you're helmet-shopping--would've probably prevented the road rash. Light-colored mesh will actually keep you cooler in the summer than no jacket, and if you get one with the 2 liners it'll work on into winter. Well, now I'm silly, I've heard from Mom what winter in DM is like (we moved when I was about 1.5 y-o). This is also a good example why you need to be fully focused on your driving rather than your donut. Take care and keep healing! And hope you get your scoot fixed up soon. >'Kat

cy makes a good point. Get a full face or modular for the best protection.
When I slid down, my helmet's chin took a nasty scrap through the paint layer. Now, imagine what my own chin would look like instead, if I didn't have full-face protection.

Same here Kat. Without my full faced modular and CE Level3 Mesh Armored gear I would not have walked away from my only off in over 40 years. The left side of the helmet from the temples down from the ears to the front of the chin bar was all gouged and ground up including the face shield. Could have turned the embarrassment of dropping the bike when some sugar sand blew across the road into a life altering or life ending event.
You know how much it took to push me to revisit getting full gear appropriate for riding in the Deep South however it was the biggest favor I every received. Your kind admonitions to gear up really saved me from major injury. Between Leather Up and Cycle Gear there are plenty of choices in gear and optically correct helmets with many options being less than $100.

I recall how surprised I was when you finally understood and flipped your stand against gear. * * * * * Folks while I agree that it's your life to live how you want including sans gear, I also know that gear is best and all the excuses for not wearing gear are just that--excuses. It doesn't have to be that expensive, nor that hot (a mesh jacket will actually keep you cooler than no jacket. Hopefully you'll never put its protection to use, but if you should happen to go down then it's immediately worth having it. Even a slow slide can tear you up--my sr year in hs, I pushed too hard in a 100-yard race (I am so NOT a sprinter!) and ended up going down and sliding a few feet on the asphalt track. At that time I could run 2 miles in about 15 minutes, so my fastest short-sprint speed was maybe 10 miles an hour. I still remember how much it suxed having the school nurse pick out bits of asphalt from my knee. And I still have the scar 30 years later. >'Kat

The Silver Ignitor Mesh Jacket from Leather Up barely got roughed up from a 45 mph spill and protected me 100% from upper body injury while the $99 Bilt Apollo Modular Helmet did its job too. Both pieces of gear are totally appropriate for riding in the Deep South and keep you cooler than riding without. The Bilt HeatOut Base Layers keep you cooler that running about buck tooth naked however I am not going to run around outside doing a comparison to prove it.
