Hey everyone! Thanks in advance for your help!! Here goes: The engine on the left is a 150cc engine with a long case 12" wheels, disc brakes. I was told it seized. I was able to break it free manually,but it made a couple of clanking noises. . After getting all the electrical squared away, I turned it over, it made some occasional metal clinking sounds then got stuck. I manually broke it free with not much effort and rotated it many times by hand. When using the starter, it made some occasional metal clinking sounds then got stuck. The engine on the left was donated to me. It is a 150cc engine with a short case, 10", drum brakes. You see where this is going??? 1- If first engine is toast, can I swap out the left side and make the second engine a long case with disc brakes? 2- Is it so involved that I might as well try and rebuild the first engine? 3- Parts-wise, might it be cheaper to just buy an engine (new or used). I can handle any of the above scenarios, I'm thinking it would be fun to tear it apart, just looking to see what makes the most sense. Thanks everyone, let me know what you think.

You can take advantage of the situation and get a BBK to replaced the seized piston, if the rest of the engine is ok, of course.

Dont think it is the piston, sounds lower, plus it had good compression. I'm thinking crank or bearing.

Check the mount points, if they match you can do it.

Well rebuilding would take some more gaskets of course, and would allow you to check out the crank like you think it may be. If the engine can keep moving then it isn't seized, and sometimes you hear small clanking that seems to come from the crank but is actually the variator rollers dropping down because of gravity. I actually got a free 150cc engine because the person who gave it to me thought the crank was broken because when he turned the variator he would hear clanking every now and then. I later pulled the variator off and turned it by hand without the variator on it and there was 0 clanking noises.

That's true, but when I hit it with the starter, there is a clicking sound as it turns over, then it gets stuck. I can gently break it free by hand and turn it over-no noise.
Maybe starter to gear issue?
I'll probably tear into it today....

It's probably the crankshaft bearings.
