It starts to turn over and then it stops turning but I can hear the starter moter running and then it will catch again and then let go some how and I hear the moter running. It seems like something lets go of something and then grabs it again and then lets go again. That is the best I can discribe it.

sounds like the starter bendix is not going full stroke to engage the ring gear and slipping,,take off the belt cover and hit it with a little pb blaster,,,the shaft not the belt,,,that should get you back in order i would think,,,

is the battery charged? When the batteries are weak they tend to have starter problems.

Well it started...go figure. put key in got nothing...check battery...had 11.72 V. Put on trickel charger 1 and half hours. Checked battery...shows 13.3 V...put in key...STARTED !! Bought battery...Walmart March 2011 and have 5,343 miles on it. Could it be that the battery is old and will not hold a charge? I will go for a 10 mile ride and check the battery after and see what it says. It should still be at 12 V or better...righr? If not then the battery will not hold a charge ..or..the on board charger is not working...right??

OK..just back from the test ride. Before starting = 13.3 volts....to Walmart and back(started right up at W.M)it showed when home 12.63 volts. Distance to Walmart = 17.3 miles. Temp. is 96 deg. with a nice breaze. Fan cycled on and off as it should. It is a 12V charger with autimatic shut off. I will cjeck the voltage in the morning to see if the battery is looseing power over night.

i'd be going over the starter electrically and mechanically if i were you,,,nothing like getting stuck in east bumfuk and the ride won't lite,,,no real kicker on these machines anymore if it even has one,,,my vespa et4 was miserable to kickstart,,,cold/ warm /hot it simply would not start with the kicker period ,never did get it to start once with the damned thing,,i was going to remove it to save weight cause it didn't work anyways,,,have the battery load tested also,,,and go over all the terminations of the power from battery to solenoid and to the starter and just as important the grounds,,,battery to frame and engine to frame,,,very impotant,,for good voltage transmission with no loss because of a crappy connection or two

OK..it's the next mid-morning...checked battery and it is 12.3 V...nice day...lets ride. Turn key on and one little turn over and it is done. I hear the motor running but it will not catch. SO..I do know that the battery is holding it's charge so..because I know nothing about starters/selinods(sp)and like that...I am going to have to take off plastic...right side or left...I don't know and find the parts...and maybe get my ride on the road again. I will gladlly accept any and all advice.

my money is the starter clutch is either sticking and needs lube or it has failed,,,probably lube will do it,,you need to remove the belt cover to access this part
