Howdy all, old scootdawg coming over to tap to collective brain. I have half a dozen or so of the chinese bastards, done engine swaps mods, etc...never been anything i could figure out....but
blew the engine out a tao tao 21b at 65mph, shredded it to little pieces, literally broke the mounts and case and everything else, rod sheared and jack hammered the case to bits, the brake line and all the wiring and lines and such is the only thing kept the rear wheel from separating from the scooter and probably killing me. Stuck in a new engine, changed the stator out for the one out the old engine, and literally fired it up on the first push of the starter button.
ran the engine, which purred like a kitten, 20 minutes later i changed the oil, fired it back up and warmed it up went for full throttle it burped, coughed and hiccuped, then the wiring harness from the stator, (stator and magnetic pickup harness) started smoking.....smoked a few wires, ideas before i tear it apart or is it a bad juju scooter, toss it on the curd and forget about it? after i take my engine of course, or not.

Well obviously an electrical issue. You used the old stator , and old regulator. I'd say since the engine nearly tore from the scoot , you had bare spots in the wiring , possibly caused by the near disaster. Dmartin is the guy to ask for answers here on the site . he knows everything there is to know about anything electrical on these scoots .

If the bike had been really bad JuJu you'd have been in serious jeopardy (read ambulance ride) . I concur with the other poster, I think the old parts were damaged. Remember Chinese scooters aren't bad, just misunderstood. BTW, didn't you used to go by "chromestarhustler"?

i think that Geh hit it,,,rubbed / chafed wires,,,grounded out and turned the scoot into a toaster,,,if the loom has unpluggable sections i wouldn't toss the bike just the bad parts,,,thats my call,,,but i'd be going over every section of the bike to make sure it doesn't happen again

I agree , just go through all the wiring , even if you have to remove most of the harness . at this point I'd say you will need to test the stator and regulator to see if they are still usable. Hopefully you caught it in time. When a short occurs it is very important to check every piece of wiring to see where it happened and if it caused any other damage to other wires in the harness.

so frankly i wasnt sure of the condition of the harness, thats why i test ran the engine, everything was good during the idle session for it suddenly to have problems after running a while when i decided to rev the engine up is the confusing thing.....yeah the entire body has to come off to check the harness, and i can rebuild the harness, just seemed odd, timing wise.
no big deal 4 of the other scooters are running i will pull it from the lineup and get around to it some day.maybe.

it was the green wire, how did you know.
just in case the next question is the body and engine ground are attached to the engine and frame.

its attached firmly to the head stud where it originally came off.
i guess the body needs to come off and the wire get repaired before do much else on it.

Ground wire is attached to the 'head stud"?
Is that the valve cover bolt, or the cylinder head bolt? Either way, not a very good ground point. The jug is separated from the crankcase by a paper gasket (no conduction there), and the valve cover is separated by a rubber o right (sort of), so no conduction there. Can't believe there is an electrical lug under a cylinder head nut ... maybe something on the side of the head? Ground path can only be thru the head bolts or down the valve chain.
Anyway - there isn't a ground directly on the crankcase anywhere?

yeah ground is to the valve cover bolt, and even with gaskets the valve cover isnt isolated, valve cover has a o-ring seal not a pancake gasket so its metal to metal contact with the cylinder head and the cylinder studs run thru everything, it's really not a bad place for a ground several factory scooters have that being the place for the engine ground, its not like the provided an extra 12 inches of wire to move it either, thats where it was originally, thats the only place the wire was long enough to attach to and it ohms out as a good spot with my meter, never saw the need to move it.

The gaskets on the valve cover really don't make a difference with the ground , since the bolt is threaded into the head.

Yeah i know, seems to be a bit of confusion from some others though...thanks... i will get the scooter tore into soonish, need to get my new hi compression 155 into the other 21b, this one will have to wait til after rotation at the hospital is over.
