now that my engine is much quieter after replacing worn out cam i'm hearing a faint rattle. sounds like a loose gear gently grinding. is that a bad starter clutch?
if so whats the damage if not replaced soon?

hmmm, just now thought about the new rocker arms i installed yesterday. the pins and arms were a loose fit. think the diameter of the pins were a bit too small so it might be the rocker arms/pins i'm hearing. i don't know, i'll have to listen close and find out where it's rattling.

When my starter clutch was going bad , it made a weird noise . I recorded a video and posted it . I'll find it and post the link for you.

lol, i was about to ask if it was the faint rattle or the loud erratic rattle until you started beating the scoop. i think it is the same sound but i'm not 100% certain. what did you order and how much was involved to install?

I bought an ncy high performance starter clutch . I think I paid around 50 bucks . TBA I can't remember . it was between 40-60 bucks, lol . you will also need a side cover gasket . other than that its just the right tools . you need a flywheel puller and a starter nut socket. Its a special type of socket. I didn't have one , so I held the variator nut and Grabbed the clutch but with vise grips and used a breaker bar on the end of the vice grips.

Other than the noise , there were no other symptoms. The Moise came and went. When it was cold out , the noise would not start right away . it would start after the engine warmed up some . it also made the noise at riding rpms " not just at idle ". I did have starter clutch slippage. Sometimes I would hit the ignition and the engine would just spin and make a weird noise like the starter clutch wasn't engaging. Then I'd hit the ign again and it would start. So I guess there were a couple symptoms.
