A friend of mine gave me his old 50cc scooter that used to run untill his uncle did something to it. it used to have a problem before that it would start and rev really high and shut off. now it does not start unless I kick start it. Here is what I have done so far. I replaced the spark plug, replaced the battery, cleaned the carb I was amazed how much junk was in it, it has stuff that looked like clay. I checked compression using the starter and it maxes out at 120psi with the starter I did not try using the kick start. I don't know about before but now It does not start with the push button I have to kick start it. it looks like its not cranking fast enough to start. I feel that its not getting enough fuel I try to by pass the tank and I think it was getting too much fuel. it has a vacuum fuel valve in the tank is I vacuum the valve I see fuel coming out of it. I know when the engine starts and revs really high and shut off is not enough fuel problem on 2 cycle engines right? Oh if I kick start it and put my hand pretty much covering the cab it will keep running. Massive air leak? How to I test the reid valves? Any ideas??

First have you tried adjusting the fuel mixture screw on the carb by turning clockwise? If you put your hand over the carb and it runs, that sounds like it is adjusted too rich with fuel.

I have not drained the fuel tank yet, the tank was full when he gave it to me, I guess it would be a good idea to drain it. I also need to buy a new oil line hose the one it has looks to be in bad shape. I think the scooter has 5500 miles on it.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Draining the tank will be super helpful. Have you seen the carb tuning guide posted in this forum's tech library? It is very helpful.

I have been busy the last few days. I took out the tank and cleaned it up the pick up filter was really dirty and not much fuel was coming out now it great. I was able to keep it running again at full throttle but I needed to keep covering the carb if not it would die. I then took out the reed valves and I noticed that I could see light if I shined my flashlight into the bottom side of it. I took the reed valves apart and flipped them around I don't see anymore light shinning to I think it's better. I was really hoping that was it but nope same thing. the bike starts runs for a second and shuts off, if I keep covering the carb it stays on. I'm pretty sure its a gas problem but where can it be the crankcase seals are bad and it has a vacuum leak. is there such a thing as a leak down test for a 2 cycle motor? I really want to fix up the scooter but I have to get it running first. Any ideas?? Oh I cleaned out the carb again and it was clean, I did notice the picture someone posted about how to tune the card my low speed needle does not have the little pin like the one in the picture it looks more like the screw to drain the fuel bow. I need to setup an account to post pictures.

I was looking and I cant find the carb tuning guide, can you link it for me? I found a bunch on how it works and stuff but nothing on how to do it.

Great thanks. now the problem I have if you look at the picture below the my idle screw does not look like that one. mine has a cone end. if you remove the one for the fuel bowl it looks just like that. I could see the adjustment of the low speed jet not letting the bike idle but it should still run when you get into the secondary jet (high speed) right.
