Does anyone here know someone who can make a head for a costume?
I made a white shepherd costume back in college, which considering the time I had and the lack of quality materials, came out fairly decent.
But it's always bothered me that it's not really particularly good. I've been wanting to remake it for several years. But now KC is getting WorldCon (the BIG international sci-fi/fantasy convention) next summer, so I'm motivated to actually get this done.
I can do the body, no problem. That's just sewing and fitting. Plus I have a friend who actually CAN sew, who I'm certain will help out.
What I can't do is the head. I know nothing about modern mask making, just the old rough papier maché. And that won't cut it for the level of realism I'm wanting.
I've been grazing the various "furry" sites, looking for and contacting costume makers. So far either they're already booked for this year, or they don't make blank heads (meaning only the base mask, no fur), or they only make complete costumes.
So failing there, it occurred to me that my fellow Dawgs here are a VERY varied group of people. And just maybe, one of you might know of someone who can help me out here.
Whaddaya say? Any help for me with this?

howdy, it occurs to me it would be appropriate to contact the species you are trying to represent and simply have them send a delegate. this would save the considerable effort you are doing to simulate so difficult an appearance. lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Funny, ken. I'm certain if I did that, I'd be up to my nose with shepherds. There's something dogs just like about me. I worked at a vet's for a year, which was a great thing. One time, we got in a pair of trained attack-guard German Shepherds. As in, they patrolled the grounds alone, and would evaluate the situation and attack on their own with nobody around to issue commands. Which is what they had done the night before, in the mud. The vet's assistant warned me to be very careful around them because of this. Well, I walked by and noticed they'd drunk all their water. "Aw, you poor things!" So I go a new bowl of water, opened the door since they were in the back of the run, and knelt to switch bowls. Looked up into a shepherd's face. My thought was "I'm toast." Then he went SLURP!!!! across my face. And the other crawled over him to nuzzle and love me up. They couldn't get enough petting and loving back from me. Of course, they most likely knew they weren't on duty. But still, it pleased me these two ferocious dogs gave me their affection like that. The big love-hounds. >'Kat

My mom is great at making costumes and stuff. She has made many dresses and costumes for us kids in the past . she use to make baby dolls a long time ago. She use to work in a sewing factory when she was younger. I'd love to say she could help , but she is very busy right now . she has been staying at the hospital in Pittsburgh for the past month and nearly a half with my dad, well about 97% of the time she has been there. She was finally able to go home for a couple days here and there in the past two weeks to get some of her work done. Weekly She cleans 3 churches , 2 of the houses at 2 of the churches , and she cleans Carmichael's fire hall . luckily she had someone who would help out while she was with my dad , but since he is getting better she feels better about coming home a little. My mom is the one who sewed the vinyl together for my scoot seat , then I stretched it over and stapled it.
PS . the dresses weren't for me

You might Google for fursuit makers, there's quite a fair number in the furry community, although their work isn't cheap.

Thanks java. I hadn't thought to google just plain fursuit makers.
I have contacted several from the furry sites. And had one say she could do this, for a price I found very reasonable indeed. Then 3.5 months later, she finally replied to one of my emails saying she's sorry but she's decided she can't do this, not at the realism I'm wanting. I understand, and that's okay. I just wish she'd realized this about 3 months sooner.
Seems all the ones on the furry sites are already closed for commissions. Or else like I said above, only make full finished ones.
But maybe there's costumers online that aren't on the furry sites. Worth a shot. Thanks for the thought!

There's lots of great artists in the furry community, unfortunately some aren't real good at running a business and/or over estimate their abilities, hence the long delay, they prolly didn't realize that they didn't have the skill to meet your request. How real are you looking for?"

How real? Very. As in I'd like to get away from the downward slope of the muzzle and the rounded hump at the back of the head, which is what all the realistic heads have done to accommodate a narrow flat dog's head onto our tall round human head. And I want a mouth that can move.
I already have ears that will move according to my mood. Theoretically. Oh, they do move, it's just questionable how mood related they are. Ha.
I've now googled costumers, mascot makers, and more furries. And have contacted two for an estimate. One I'm certain will be far beyond my budget, if they can even do this. The other, who knows.
Sigh. I'm beginning to think I really will have to figure this out on my own. Which I know will be a disappointing end result since I just don't have any experience in this area of art/crafts. Sigh.
