Hey guys, I have a Genuine buddy 50cc that i bought recently. The scooter starts great, and has great power even at full throttle, but at random it will lose power to where i can't go faster than 20mph or worse and i have to come to idle and sometimes have to turn it off and on again to get it back to normal. I went through the carb and changed the fuel filter yesterday and no luck. The seller told me a mechanic said the muffler needs replacing, I did hear a whining noise coming from the muffler yesterday when it started slowing down.
My question is, could the muffler be causing this issue, and if so, is replacing it the only option. I live on Honolulu and part availability here is limited as well as shipping as very high. What are my options? Thank you

Has the valve clearance been inspected? My opinion on what has been described is an overheating engine in need of a tune up. Check the valves first, is my suggestion. How many miles on the engine?
Edit: If the exhaust has too much or not enough resistance; it could cause performance issues. Excessive carbon buildup could contribute to congestion. I have a stock gy6 50cc exhaust that has 25,000 mile on it and it still performs well.

The engine has 9k miles on it, I don't know the history of tune ups. I don't have a garage so i have not been able to check valve clearance yet, i have to do things one at a time, so i was hoping someone on here had a similar experience so they could point me in the right direction. I've never had a muffler clog up on me, but it did make the strange noise yesterday when it was running badly.
Maybe today ill take off the muffler and see if i can't find anything going on, and possibly check other areas, until i have the time and space to check the valve. Thanks for the reply!

My muffler whines sometimes as well, and has since I got the scoot. I believe it may be metal vibrating, and I have removed and cleaned out my entire muffler and even scraped as much carbon out as I possibly could and the sound never went away, so what I am saying is try not to diagnose things by sound, it gets frustrating and gives you false hope as to the source of problems. Been there done that lol. Get yourself a basic metric auto tool kit and a few other small tools like the feeler gauge blades you'll need to measure valve clearances. You don't need a garage or anything special, I do all of my wrenching in back of my house, and you may be able to find these tools at any hardware store. I think the hardest thing in all of that to find would be the feeler gauge blades just because it's hard to describe them to a store clerk who doesn't know what they are lol It takes me 10 minutes to take the bucket and seat off, unscrew the 4 bolts holding the valve cover on. Then another 10 or so fidgeting with the valve clearances getting them just right, ya know when they kind of hold onto the blades but only lightly as they slip in and out of the gaps. Then another 5-10 to put it back together, seems to take less time to put things together again lol.

I usually don't use sound much but it was so loud and right when the scooter started acting up it seemed to coincide. Well driving it today down the street to get a gauge to check the valve, it starts acting up again, so i stopped while still holding part throttle and the break, then put my hand behind the muffler and there was barely exhaust coming out. I shut the scooter off and turned it back on, and sure enough lots of exhaust gases coming out, and its running fine again. So i think it is the muffler after all, now my question is, whats my next step.. do i just bite the bullet and order a new OEM muffler for 200+ with shipping, have a local shop weld on a different muffler or can this one be salvaged, but it sounds like parts of it might have come apart inside and are causing the blockage.

Take the muffler off of the scoot and check it out before ordering anything. Use a coat hanger or something long and strong but bendy so you can shove it all the way up each end up till you hit the cat converter. Also try just shaking it around while it is off of the scoot to see if there's any noise of loose objects inside the muffler. Make sure there is nothing blocking it, rocks maybe? Does the scoot sound loud like a dirtbike or soft like a scooter?
