I've never tried selling something on CL, so I'm a bit unsure on how I should proceed in this situation. Lady came out last Sat and test-drove the Taurus. Loved him. Except of course he had to make me a liar and red-line the temp gauge. Bad car. We left things Sat that the guys would add the leak sealer stuff Mon (since they were almost closing) and I'd let her know how things went. They found out the coolant was low, which probably caused the heating. And added the sealer so that'll take care of burning off coolant. Emailed her that night that my main mech drove my car home to make sure things were good. She replied asking when we could get together. I replied either Thurs or Fri before work, or Sat. I also let her know mech drove the wagon around Tues and home again just to really confirm no overheating issues at all. She wrote back asking my day off. I replied Sat. And there's been silence then, since Tues pm. Meanwhile, a friend of both my mech and the guy who's done body work on the wagon has gotten with me. His old Crown Vic has something so wrong with the front end that it's actually become dangerous to drive. He knows all about my car--it was funny, he met with mech Dave for lunch and wanted to know why he was driving Kathy's wagon. He wants to buy my car (price unknown as I didn't think to ask what he would offer). I really do want to get my wagon sold. Besides that he's costing me money on taxes and insurance, I also hate that he's just sitting and not being used. Well, I guess not being used by a new owner, since my mech's been driving him around . If it matters, she seemed a really nice lady. Has four kids, who of course fought to sit in the third row. And yet were good kids, didn't mess around with the car or anything. If she'd been like the guy from Lawrence who asked if my car would last 6 months 'cause that's all he needed it for, then I wouldn't hesitate. He was rather a jerk. She was not. So what does courtesy dictate here? Do I jump on mech's friend offer to buy (assuming he offers what I'm wanting)? Or am I obligated to continue waiting for lady to get back with me, since we had a verbal agreement on selling her the wagon? Thanks guys for advice on this. >'Kat

i didn't know craigslist had ethics. no need to feel obligated unless someone gives me a small deposit. i am selling to the first person that puts cash in my hand.

Craigslist Ethic: It's not sold until its sold. It's for sale to anybody until it's sold.
Too many people stand you up. No holding anything for anyone. The first one to offer sufficient cash gets the item.
As a seller, that is the presumption that I have always taken, and that is the presumption that most sellers have with buyers. If you want something, you be the first there/here with cash.

Kathy it's simple, she said she would come on a specific date, she did not, nor did she have the courtesy to call you or let you know why, that's her fault not yours, you have no obligation to her at all.
Another person wants the car, puts the cash in your hand, it's a done deal and a helpful tip, either by a witness that is with you or by a signed piece of paper the buyer agrees it's "as is" no warranty or promises of how long it may do anything.
The lady calls back, if you haven't sold it, tell her it's up for sale to the first person who pays for it, if it's already sold, just say sorry, another person bought it after you didn't show up, simple as that.

Thanks guys. I knew you'd have good advice for me here. Scrunchie-face v-kissies to y'all!
Sadly, the mech's friend came across a really good deal on a new car last night so bought it. Sigh. So waiting for lady cost me a good sale. Although I don't know what he planned to offer. He did say his son still needs a car--son's car died hard and unrepairable a few months ago. He's been getting to work via friends but of course wants his own vehicle. But he might not want a wagon.
I'm going to call him tom morn, and also one of the guys at the shop who mentioned he might actually be interested himself for his daughter. If they're both no's then I'm reposting the ad, with the new note that my mechs added the professional level leak stopper sealant stuff and there's been absolutely no indication of any overheating tendencies.
It really shouldn't be this hard to sell a car. Even one with a gasket leak. Should it?
Sigh.

Oh, and actually JR, she never said anything about coming to buy on any set date. She said she couldn't come Thurs 'cause she had classes that day. And asked for my day off. I offered Fri morn before work or any time Sat which is my day off. And that's when she disappeared.
Sigh again.

No money, no deal. Let them know if they want it, they should hurry up and buy it.

Well, this worked out better. A local 22-year-old young man just drove my wonderful Taury-car away. He was so excited about the six feet of cargo length. And the picnic tray, and even the world's coolest vanity mirror. His mom test-drove my car, and kept commenting how nice he is. Helped they had just drove a junker last night, a Geo Metro that died twice on the tesdrive and obviously hadn't had "some" oil "spilled" on the engine despite what the seller claimed. They were going to the QT I've used, to fill him up with clean cornless gas. That makes me feel best of all, 'cause it tells me they care about their cars, that they're going to take good care of my good old car. So disappearing lady did me a favor. I think my car went to a much better home. And he's still here in town. I can play "Spot the Taury" and maybe someday see him on the streets around here. But yes, I cried when he left me, with his naked plateless butt and me not at the wheel. >'Kat and and
