I'm tired of those damn plastic body panels, they keep braking and get in the way when I have to work on my scoot. Anyone done this here? Is it bad for the engine, generator and starter motor to get wet when it rains? Any good Ideas how to sort the cables and electrical components?

i assume you need to weather proof every electrical connection and then you should be fine but i've never done it. i would buy a new scoot before i spent a day doing that. just get one with less plastic, that's my plan for the next purchase.

When I got my first scooter I tinkered with it a lot, so I left various body panels, and even the floorboards, off for some time. I put a little silicon on the TOP of my electrical connections and left the bottom open to let condensation out. The body panels are easy to fix with plastic weld epoxy and replacement screw clips. It's always best to keep things clean and dry, but if you're going to be taking the thing apart all the time...

I've been thinking the same (all steel). Got that rescue back together with basic wiring: Just enough to get the engine functional. All the wiring is trashed but in place w/lights. Plastics are a mess. Thought I would run head & tail lights and hide all wiring (maybe fishing through the tubing). It runs like a bat outta he**! LOL

I'm tired of those damn plastic body panels, Ditto. I even had a thread around here. Here is what I wish... I wish that the chinese manufacturers would settle on a few standards for things like frames/tripletree, plastics attachment (so that a set of new/different plastics could be put on regardless of manufacturer), etc. There is no direct replacement if any piece of plastic on my scoot breaks. There is no direct replacement if the triple tree breaks. I am sure that, in China, there are enough scoots around that if you break something, there will be a scooter boneyard where you can get a replacement. But here in the U.S., no such luck.

Definitely needing some customizing on frame. 20+ yrs of welding/ironwork comes in handy. Will strip the rest of the plastic off and actually be able to view panel points. Want to make some kind of trike or something akin to training-wheels (seems dangerous). Would love to see my best friend ride in a few months (retiring). Her sense of balance is not good (not even a bicycle - maybe this can be "fi/ed" with a bit of experience and a boost of confidence?) and has never driven a self propelled vehicle. Would bleeping LOVE to see that smile of freedom on her face! Will do everything in my power and use whatever resourses necessary to see this through.

The welded points don't look that where made carefully, just two tiny points on each tube, the tubes are rusting after less than a year, I guess it would be better to make a custom frame from scratch with quality stainless steel or aluminum tubing; might get expensive though.

That actually crossed my mind before . I'd like to construct a frame made out of aluminum . no rust and much lighter.

Just keep in mind, if it's above 50cc it has to be registered, and it's the frame that gets registered. I never really understood that, but the only part of your bike that is legally registered is the frame itself, everything else is an accessory.

Here they register the frame and the engine, you can change the engine as long as you show the invoice on your next inspection, I have to find out if it is possible to stamp the same frame number on a different chassis, I've never seen the people at the inspection place taking pictures of where the frame number is.

As far as building a frame out of stainless , I would not do that , stainless is really fairly soft , aluminum would be my second choice , but aluminum has to be twice as thick as steel to get the same strength , my first choice would be chrome moly tubing .if its good enough for a top fuel car running about 7000 hp it should be good for a scooter .all airplane frames are CM so that should also tell you something . CM has to be TIG welded or as in the old days on airframes and early front engine dragsters, gas welded with oxygen and acetylene .in reality TIG welding is just a electric form of gas welding .what really takes time and patience is the fitting of the tubing as they all have to be coped to fit .but would be a fun project to do .and bragging rights when finished
