Hello everybody, Checking in from Sunny South West Florida here. I just purchased a 2011 Tao Tao 150cc VIP (future champion?) it only has 1,382 miles on it and I've been lurking around trying to find out where I'm going to start my mods on this thing. I want to eventually get the EFI kit and put on a baby turbo so I'm probably not going to buy a new carb or CDI, I will how ever mod the spark signal sender (don't know if thats what its actually called or not) to pick up the timing a bit and tune the carb. I am wondering however if it would be worth modding the stater while I'm in there and if so what should I go with? (I plan on adding a ton of lights as well) Should I wait to mod the CVT until after I've done the power mods or before? the front wheel on the bike has already been upgraded by the previous owner but the back wheel and tire is bone stock, should I be worried about the back wheel holding together after power upgrades? (I'm not a little guy)

I voted CVT, but even if you are not replacing the carburetor, the first thing should be tuning and jetting the carb. In the technical library of this forum is a very good walk through by alleyoop. After that move on to the CVT. Let me know if you have any questions. I have the exact same scoot.

i also voted the cvt. upgrade the variator to a 115mm. i believe the 150's come with 108mm stock. it is the only mod i have done on my 150cc. increased my top speed by 7mph and dropped my rpm's by about 2,000 at 45mph.
easily the best mod you can do for a 150cc imo.

Did you have to change anything else with that modification, belt / clutch?

Thank you that sounds like a great idea, I've been poking around and doing research trying to make sure that before I open it up I will have enough know how to complete the task! The CVT looks the only part of the scooter I know nothing about lol. I may end up getting rid of all of the emissions control stuff first even though it wasn't on my radar until the other night.

First thing i would Replace would be the valve Stems for both tires. If your a bigger Guy then it is a MUST to get good ones. That front tire blows because of a old cracked (old as in "been setting in a crate in some warehouse") valve steam and your going to have a very bad day.
Safety first, then i would look into the CVT starting with a good Gates or Brando belt.

I think people should leave their emissions equipment on. It's there for a reason and doesn't seem to affect performance unless it's broken. I know people like to simplify things to avoid problems but if why trash the environment for no good reason? I also think it's irresponsible to encourage people to remove their emissions systems. It's just asking the government to "crack down" on the scooter community. Where I live we don't have scooter emissions checks, and I'd like to keep it that way and avoid the hassle of yet another government program. Just my opinion.

For my TaoTao the emission parts were garbage and poorly designed. I was getting fluid buildup and leaking in my air box. Besides these scooters are ever small engines. They do not produce a lot of emissions. We are already helping the environment by not cruising around in a cage. The least we can do is not destroy our engine by pumping dirty fumes back into it.

Larry The previous owner make a big todo about how he did everything he could to kill vibrations on the front wheel to the point that its a brand new wheel/stem/ dynabeads/and kenda tire. The back wheel is stock other than the dyna beads and valve stem. I also have a brand new set of wheels and tires that he received from Tao Tao after complaining they where unsafe. Thank you that sounds like a great idea, I've been poking around and doing research trying to make sure that before I open it up I will have enough know how to complete the task! Florida has never had any emissions programs and I don't think they ever will. Most of the vehicles on the road down here never see anything more than 1/8 throttle (think year olds driving cadi's every where) now in China the Scoot is what everyone rides so they need that stuff and when it breaks they have spares all over the place! I know my local scoot store could fix it but when they sell 10+ yr olds 50cc scoots for nearly $2k I'm not bringing my scoot or wallet near them.

Pro Tip: I would still replace the Valve Stems nevertheless.

I'll look into the valve stems but upon inspection they look brand new and are solid metal upgrades.
